A Dutch company, specialized in innovative verge maintenance has developed a method to repair bad verges in a more cost effective way then the tradionnel method.
A tractor tire is used as a face cutter that mills loose the higher lying verge material and moves the loosened material into the dangerous potholes near the road surface. The wheels of the transport and powering vehicle (mobile digger) compact the verge material.
The machine cannot be used independently but must be mounted to a vehicle like a wheeled excavator (mobile digger) to be moved, positioned and powered.
With the intellectual property (IP) , the company protects besides the building of the machines also the execution of the work.
Throughout the Netherlands, the company has established exclusive partnerships with contractors of road authorities by means of an exclusive license to execute the work in their region. The partner companies acquire and execute the orders; the company supplies its special machine and protects its partners from competition by means of an exclusive license agreement.
In the European Union, the company seeks to develop exclusive partnerships with companies for cooperation to further develop its verge repair system in general and specifically for the local circumstances and requirements.

The method offers the following advantages. The used rubber causes no damage to road surface pavement, trees, other materials in the verge and also no damage to the machine KLEISER when it hits on hard material under the sod.
The method is fast and efficient, the machine only needs one person ... and can ... 4km/day. A standard excavator ... 1 km/day. And the machine is 4-5 times more cost effective then refilling.
The method has proven itself ecological responsible because of no addition of strange material from elsewhere and a low energy consumption (~ 4 kW per vehicle).
The method is ideal to gradually turn a non-grass covered verge, which can be reinforced with gravel, milled asphalt, etc. back into a more beautiful and traffic speed reducing grass verge.
Other applications are possible like removing sod from bicycle roads, repair of unsurfaced roads and smoothing of spoil. A method to remove material from under guardrails is developed.
The method gives excellent results for grass verges, verges reinforced with gravel, milled asphalt, rubble, etc. and rock-hard clay verges and is very well applicable next to turf stones.
The grass sod is cut into appropriate sized pieces for fast recovery of stable sod without sowing. The positioning of the machine is flexible for working around trees and obstacles.
The method gives flat verges, they are safe and easy to mow.
Safety is very important at the execution; verge material is moved in a controlled way, the face cutter moves slowly (~ 12 rpm, 1 m/s), quietly and predictable for the traffic. The method causes limited nuisance to traffic during execution.
The method is beneficial for water drainage. The high parts in the verge are cut away, no extra material is additioned.

Further improvements of the method are investigated in cooperation with universities. For instance sustainable removal of unwanted young wood bush to free the sight of road users from obstructions. The stumps are cut below the ground surface.
