A French company located in New Caledonia has developed an automated submergible system using passive samplers for in situ and continuous environment monitoring of waters that reduces human intervention and the associated logistical costs. The company offers a commercial agreement to industrial or engineering companies with expertise in the sector of monitoring waters.
For more than 15 years, the French company located in New Caledonia has provided tools and services for the environmental monitoring of water quality, in particular marine environments.
One of the main constraints of marine environmental monitoring is the low concentration level of contaminants. Additionally, contaminant analysis in seawater represents a higher difficulty level. Moreover, the frequency of sampling often needs to be high to ensure that an adequate assessment of the quality of the marine environment is achieved.
Typically, contaminant analysis is carried out using traditional techniques that rely on discontinuous water sampling protocols requiring the use of complex steps/pretreatments to avoid the risk of accidental contamination of the samples.
In addition, discontinuous surveillance may lead to partial representativeness by only retrieving samples at specific times. In this situation, the probability of obtaining bias results is significant.
The company has therefore developed an innovative solution to take a new step in the performance of environmental monitoring.
The technology consists of a self-contained, fully programmable, and submergible system exposing a number of passive samplers (eg Diffusive Gradient in Thin film or DGT™) sequentially.
The device includes a tray that receives passive samplers, a motor powered by batteries coupled to an electronic control board for complete management of the technology.
The analytical results thus obtained are average concentrations of contaminants determined over a given period of exposure in water, which allows the client to have available a time series. The sequences are programmable in duration and frequency.
The system is designed to be left for several weeks or months in-situ depending of the objectives, fixed to a mooring line or attached to any type of structure. Moreover, it can be installed in all types of aquatic environment, up to 5000 m deep.
Finally, the solution is able to monitor changes in the concentration of various elements present in natural aquatic environments such as heavy metals (including mercury), organic pollutants, pesticides, personal care products, phosphate and antibiotics.
The company is well established in the market of New-Caledonia. Now, the company wants to enter the European market and is looking for industrial or engineering companies as distributors.
The innovation resides in the use of passive samplers exposed sequentially in water thanks to an automated submerged device, and more precisely in the technical solution of exposure/occultation of the passive samplers to the environment to be monitored.
Compared to the traditional sampling methodology:
- handling is considerably reduced;
- the number of conditioning steps is lessened;
- the pre-treatment steps are eliminated;
- the risk of sample contamination is considerably lowered;
- the frequency of field trips to the sea, lakes or rivers is considerably reduced.
This innovation, while guaranteeing a high level of quality in aquatic environment monitoring, overall leads to reduced expenditure.
The French company is offering a commercial agreement to industrial or engineering companies with expertise in the water monitoring sector.
As a distributor, the partner will be responsible for the development of the local market and direct sales to customers within his geographical region of responsibility. Furthermore, the partner will be responsible for the technical support of the systems (installation, commissioning, calibration of the system regarding to the environment, maintenance, customer training, sending samples to the French company).
The French company will provide thorough technical training of the partner’s personnel in preparation for these activities. It will also be in charge of analyzing the samples from installed systems and providing results reports.
