The Serbian laboratory has developed a technology for characterization of in vitro cytotoxicity of the newly synthesized product for the market and control of water (waste water, irrigation, drinking) quality. The laboratory offers collaboration through joint-venture creation and/or technology consultations services. In particular, collaboration focused on evaluation of in vitro cytotoxicity of different organic compounds and their degradation/transformation products is envisioned.
The laboratory is part of the largest R&D institute in Serbia. The laboratory employs about 30 researchers, and an established position in Serbia in environment monitoring domain. The laboratory is active in research of immobilization of azo-dyes and enzymes on solid substrates for the development of biochemical sensors and spectroscopic test methods for the detection of low concentrations of pollutants.
The laboratory is offering joint further development of technology for characterization of in vitro cytotoxicity of the newly synthesized product for the market and control of water (irrigation, drinking) quality. The development could take place through joint-venture creation or technology transfer agreement. The technical consultations can include particular points of interest of the potential partners.
The pesticides applied in the agriculture, as well as the organic waste compounds undergo chemical transformations due to the effects of the environment (sun light, climate changes). The products of their transformation are usually more toxic then the parent compounds. Therefore with the offered methodology, evaluation of in vitro cytotoxicity of different organic compounds and their degradation/transformation products is envisioned. Cytotoxic effects of parent compounds and their degradation / transformation products are evaluated by application of various biological and biochemical tests using physiologically important enzymes.
The method is currently tested in Serbia. The technology aims to be applied in monitoring and management of pesticide/organic waste decomposition products since it has in focus compounds that emerge from variable influence of the environment (sun light, climate changes). The technology is well suited for areas with shortage of water and agricultural regions.
The innovation of the described technology is approach of evaluation of in vitro cytotoxicity, i.e. original combination of the setup of equipment and the model system. The laboratory applies combination of novel biochemical sensors and spectroscopic test methods for the detection of low concentrations of pollutants. The advantage of the technology developed by the laboratory enables obtaining variety of information in-situ by different techniques: (1) the identification of compound and their degradation/transformation products is performed using analytical techniques (UPLC coupled with mass spectrophotometry and GCMS), (2) Cytotoxicyty of the compounds will be characterized by activity of physiologically important enzymes (ATPases, cholinesterases, peroxidases), genotoxicity (by cytokinesis-block micronucleus test using human blood lymphocytes as model system), and oxidation stress parameter measuring.
Currently this technology is used only in field tests in serbia. The technology can be applied in characterization of the newly synthesized product prepared for the market, and also in the control of water (waste water, irrigation, drinking) quality. The technology aims to be applied in monitoring and management of organic pesticide/waste decomposition processes since it has in focus compounds that emerge from variable influence of the environment (sun light, climate changes).
The laboratory management is motivated to further develop the method and converted it into product offered on the market and/or offer consultancy services to similar laboratories and companies in toxicity monitoring segment of service market.
