A Czech research institute has developed ecological cement based mainly on waste materials. Application of this cement in the end-products helps reducing their carbon footprint. The composition of the cement represents know-how developed on an extended laboratory level. Scientists are looking for partners interested in joint further development of the material or for companies interested in production under a license agreement. Research cooperation agreement or license agreements are sought.
Manufacture of the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) belongs to one of the biggest producers of greenhouse gases (mainly CO2).
The solution offered:
A Czech research institute has developed new cement, which represents an ecological and price alternative to the ordinary Portland cement (OPC). This ecological cement represents mainly a mixture of relatively easy available wastes in their powdered forms.
The solution offered represents both an ecological and a price alternative to the ordinary Portland cement (OPC). A processing of the offered ecological cement is the same as the processing of OPC.
Powdered ecological cement is mixed with water and with sand (or other aggregates); the resulting suspension is pressed or casted into forms. Setting and demoulding time of the casted material corresponds to the time typical for OPC.
Ecological products based on the cement were tested on extended laboratory level. The biggest mass of the samples prepared at laboratory was about 15 kg.
In general, the physical and mechanical properties of concretes from the ecological cement are lower compared with materials from OPC. For these reasons, the ecological cements are expected to be utilized not for the “top applications” (i.e. any load-bearing applications such as bridges etc.) but for applications where “modest” properties of these eco - materials are acceptable: e.g. anti-noise barriers, municipal furniture, simple sculpture, material for eco-parks, bike-parks, mortars, art products etc. Using the mortar together with bricks pressed from the ecological cement, small municipal or gardening buildings with a completely ecological character could be assembled.
As an example, the picture in the attachment shows 15 kg “dog’s corner stone” exposed on “dog’s exercise meadow”.
Known competing solutions:
Alternative cements to OPC are mainly based on so-called natural or artificial pozzolanic materials. The pozzolanic materials comprise of materials like fly ash, meta-kaoline and silica fume. Usually cements based on these pozzolanic materials suffer from high price (metakaoline) or with low quality due to nonstandard compositions (fly ash).
Another ecological alternative to OPC represents geopolymer cement based on alkali activated aluminosilicates. Using qualified natural sources for preparation, the result is too expensive geopolymer in comparison with OPC concrete. On the other hand, due to waste usage the geopolymer-based materials suffer with efflorescence and unpredictable stability.

Scientists are looking for partners interested in joint further development of the material and for companies interested in production under a license agreement. In the case of joint further research and development of the material on higher technology level partner(s) for European projects (e.g. Horizon 2020) are sought. Research cooperation agreement or license agreements are sought.
The institute optimized an original mixture of mainly waste pozzolanic materials in order to prepare ecological cement with aim to achieve properties of the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) standard and to keep the price of this mixture to be competitive with OPC.
- The main benefit of the offered ecological cement is almost „zero” carbon footprint in the process of its application.
- Easy preparation: the cement - wastes in powdered forms are mixed together with some natural additives and the final powdered mixture – i.e. ecological cement - is ready to use in a similar way as ordinary Portland cement (OPC).
- Mixture of ecological cement with water and aggregates could be pressed or could be casted in a form of suspension. The time needed for setting or demoulding is similar to OPC.
- Utilization of the waste sources for the preparation of the offered ecological cement contributes to environmental worldwide policy of sustainable development and simultaneously guarantees price competitiveness to the OPC.
A prototype has been successfully verified in the institute’s laboratory. The cement has been optimised on a laboratory level and the maximum of processed material was 15 kg. Weather stability of the new ecological cement is being experimentally tested at ambient external conditions for more than one year.
The composition of the new cement represents secret know-how.
