A laboratory of the largest Serbian institute for natural sciences, is specialized in development and applications of separation and electrochemical methods for biomedicine and protection of the environment. The laboratory has expertize in liquid-phase microextraction, liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry, and developed a program for determination of conditions for experimental membrane extraction of pesticides.
Serbian institute is offering a testing kit for semi-quantitative detection of organophosphate and carbamate pesticides in water developed by the laboratory. The detection limit is below the concentration allowed for target compounds. The kit can be used for sample analysis in the lab as well at the field.
The kit is suitable for analysis of 10 samples (each sample in duplicate), contains all components required to perform analysis, the result of the analysis (intensity of developed yellow color) can be detected either by eye or measured by portable colourimeter (at the field) or by controlled microplate reader at 405 or 450 nm (in the lab). The advantage of the application of this test is the possibility to be used at the field, by the low educated staff. Besides, test is inexpensive and faster than laboratory analysis and additionally, the prior time consuming sample preparation is avoided.
The institute’s preference is participation in joint activities (e.g., joint venture) concerning water quality control: collaboration for development of new products or service agreements, such as technical services concerning the questions of interest for the partners related to similar products. The innovation involves the application of advanced method of pesticide oxidation which increases the detection limit, compared to other bioanalytical techniques. The advantage of the application of this test is the possibility to be used at the field, by the low educated staff. For this innovation the research group was awarded several times on national and international (WBC countries) levels for innovation concerning bioanalytical methods.
The similar kits are in use in accredited laboratories or in the field for the detection of target pesticides in water and food quality control. Potential application domain of kit is its adoption for specific needs on request (fruits, medical plants, irrigation waters, waste waters, pest production). Currently, the kit is marketed in Serbia, and the laboratory negotiates export in the region (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro).
