A Dutch organization in data science and analytics is searching for partners with solutions to produce the enzyme Linamarase, that can breakdown toxin in cassava. Currently the unpredictable levels of the toxic compounds in cassava-derived products make the material unattractive for global food producers. The challenge is to produce this enzyme industrially with the help of biotechnology. A technical cooperation agreement will be provided. This request is part of an open innovation challenge.
The Dutch corporate is the global leader in data science and analytics. They develop and work with big data for food and agri companies on various applications. In addition, they have their own lab facilities in which they provide accommodation to and supervise potentially successful innovative agri companies. These companies use the big data, which is provided by the Dutch corporate. For the moment the company is working on a project to reduce cyanide in cassava by the enzyme Linamarase with biotechnology.
Cassava is the 2nd biggest crop in tropical areas. Although it serves as the most important calorie provider for 1 billion mostly poor people, it is processed in a craftsman’s type manner. Besides starch, cassava contains glucose/cyanide compounds, a plant toxin, which can be harmful to human health. The unpredictable and often high levels of these compounds in cassava-derived products make this starch source currently unattractive for global food and beverage producers. Breakdown of the compounds can be done enzymatically by Linamarase. The challenge is to produce this enzyme industrially - with the help of biotechnology - to make it widely available, in a way that even the bitter and more endurable types of cassava can be processed by the Food & Beverage industry.
Trends in urbanization, climate change and migration make cassava an important production crop for local sourcing and processing in developing countries. By making the enzyme Linamarase available in an industrialized way, on a commercial scale, through biotechnology:
- Food safety issues related to cassava can be solved;
- And the availability of cassava derivatives can be increased progressively, close to where food and beverage processors need it.
In the last years, the Dutch company helped visualize and analyze the market potential when the enzyme production for cassavas is solved and provides food safety analytics. Now they are eager to find partners in realizing the industrial production of Linamarase and thereby to expand and leverage the usage of cassava as food ingredient/component in a safe and secure way.
They are searching for innovative and capable players in the field of biotechnology with regard to the production of the enzyme Linamarase on an industrial and cost-effective base. Additionally, they are looking for partners to leverage the whole value chain, from enhancing production in the field to processing yield in an efficient and safe way. The Dutch company will provide support in food safety analytics and related services as well as in the visualization of production, distribution and processing capacities by geo-mapping. A technical cooperation agreement will be provided.
IMPORTANT: This Technology Request refers to an innovation challenge published on an open internet platform. If an organization expresses interest before closing date, it will be guided towards this open innovation platform. After registration participants can browse free through other submissions and engage in discussions. All submissions will get feedback by the company on this open platform. The challenge closes on May 27th, 2019. Mind that posts on this platform are not confidential.
Beside open discussions on the platform, sharing of confidential information will be made possible on demand. After that, the firm will select the SME's with whom they would like to cooperate in the development of a solution. Once the challenge is closed, Expressions of Interest for this technology request will be treated in the traditional way.
Partners with expertise in biotechnology for enzyme production.
And partners in the Food & Beverage industry for processing cyanide-safe starch
Type of partner sought: SME's and research innovation organizations.
The Dutch company requires partners in:
• Biotechnology for enzyme production
• Food & Beverage industry for adopting food safety guaranteed cassava derivatives.
Role of the new partners:
To develop a productionprocess for the enzyme Linamarase on an industrial scale and and cost-effective base. For partners in the Food & Beverage industry to develop a product portfolio of processed food with this locally sourced cassava raw material/ingredient.
Suitable SME's and R&D organizations are invited to share their ideas and to propose their expertise. After being selected, the new partner will be proposed to participate in the development of a new reporting approach. A technical cooperation agreement will be provided to the new partners.
