A Dutch SME developed a space saving system combining a biofilter and a trickling filter. This system provides biological odour treatment for gases such as ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulphide (H2S ), volatile organic compounds (VOC ), hydrocarbons, etc. No chemicals are used at all in this environmentally friendly solution for odour control. The company is looking for distributors with good connections to industries such as wastewater treatment, slaughter houses, rendering plants etc.
Traditional odour treatment systems use a trickling filter with an additional biofilter (bio-bed). In these systems the odorized air passes through the trickling filter and subsequently through the bio-filter. The SME developed a space saving solution with a biofilter and a trickling filter combined for biological odour treatment.
Gases that can be treated in this system are: ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulphide (H2S ), volatile organic compounds (VOC ), hydrocarbons. No chemicals are used at all, which means it is an extremely environmentally friendly solution for odour control.
The biofilter media used is heather. Heather is a natural product that contains natural bacteria, which make it ideal for odour control, and contrary to other commonly used filter media, heather is naturally scented.Heather has a specific surface area (1000-1500 m2/m3) which is significantly higher than other filter media (e.g. root wood and bark, which have a specific surface area of 250-500 m2/m3). The start-up time for heather is therefore much shorter (approx. 1 week) than e.g. root wood or bark (2-3 months). There is consequently no odour nuisance during the start-up of the biofilter.
