General information

Short Summary
Scientists of a German university have developed a method and a test stand that can be used to measure the stiffness of orthoses. The test stand makes it easy and convenient to determine and optimize the mechanical properties of ankle orthoses directly in the medical supply store. The university offers a license agreement and/or a technological cooperation agreement.
Full Description
Dynamic lower leg-foot orthoses compensate for the loss of muscle or nerve function and enable patients, e.g. after a stroke, to perform walking movements. The orthoses are specifically and precisely adapted to the patient. A decisive parameter is the stiffness of the orthosis. With the current methods, an orthosis technician is present who selects the model he or she considers to be correct based on his or her subjective impression - there is no objective method to help him or her do this. Even if the wear reduces the original stiffness of the orthosis, this reduction cannot be objectively demonstrated.

Scientists a German university have now developed a method and a test stand for measuring orthosis stiffness. With the FABIAN (Fast Adjustable Test Bench to Investigate Ankle-Foot Orthoses), the mechanical properties of ankle orthoses can be easily and conveniently determined and optimized: With a single rotation of the two main components in relation to each other, the stiffness of the ankle orthosis can be determined in the sagittal plane around three pivot points that are crucial for physiological gait: the calcaneus, the upper ankle joint and the metatarsophalangeal joint.

The university offers a license agreement and/or a technological cooperation agreement in order to refine the technology. The invention is particularly interesting for the following sectors: orthopedic technology, medical technology or health care supply stores.
Advantages and Innovations
For the first time, the herewith described test stand enables patients' needs to be determined easily and objectively directly in the medical supply store. This means that patients can be offered a lower leg-foot orthosis that is optimized for them. For the first time, it will also be possible to objectively test orthosis stiffness after prolonged wear in order to determine the need for a change.
