General information
- Short Summary
- A German university has developed a new algorithm and new coding for the upcoming 6G mobile communications with outstanding energy efficiency and extremely low latency. The solution lies in combining knowledge of the algorithm and the actual hardware architecture. The University is looking for cooperation partners, licensee and/or investors to further develop the new technology to series maturity.
- Full Description
-
High reliability and extremely low latency times are becoming increasingly important for various applications such as Industry 4.0, real-time medical procedures, augmented reality, and a host of others that are yet to emerge. In this context, 6G technology plays a crucial role.
One of the decisive factors for the reliability of modern communication systems is channel coding or forward error correction, a computationally intensive process that has a direct impact on the latency of the system. To address these conflicting needs, a promising new approach, "ensemble decoding", has been conceived. Here, several decoders work in parallel with slightly different input data. After decoding, the challenge is to select the optimum solution. This is not about the selection process itself, but about the efficiency of the process when implementing it in hardware, such as a chip. For the upcoming 6G mobile phone technology, there is a need for an improved decoding concept for polar codes.
Scientists at a German university have developed a new algorithm and new coding for the upcoming 6G mobile communications with outstanding energy efficiency and extremely low latency. Each decoder now estimates the probability of correctness in parallel with decoding, effectively masking latency. This is not only faster, but also conserves resources on the chip and provides an energy-efficient solution to the ultra-low latency required in 6G technology.
The invention of this new way of decoding polar codes has been compared to solving a puzzle. We take the pieces (log-likelihood ratios) and rearrange them in different ways. Each arrangement is decoded individually, resulting in multiple guesses about the original puzzle. During the decoding process, a measurement called a path metric is gradually calculated and helps to decide which decoded version of the data is most likely to be correct. This clever method of estimation and measurement selection allows us to determine the original message with the highest probability.
With this improvement, "Ensemble Decoding" is now ideally equipped to guarantee the reliability and extremely low latency of the upcoming new applications in 6G. The technology can be used in the following areas: 6G mobile communications, Industry 4.0, real-time IoT applications, medical devices. - Advantages and Innovations

Partner Sought
- Expected Role of a Partner
- For the market launch of 6G mobile communications technology, the university is looking for industrial partners, licensees and/or investors who can manufacture and deploy such 6G systems. Companies with experience in the development and construction of mobile networks or those with expertise in radio technology and the necessary infrastructure are conceivable. Players who are familiar with the integration of 6G components, the optimization of network performance and the large-scale rollout of 6G services would be ideal.
