General information

Short Summary
A Belgian architectural design agency (ROOILIJN) has developed SamenStalling, a modular and multifunctional system for collective bicycle parking in residential areas.

Within the Horizon Europe call NEB-2025-PARTICIPATION-03 – Beautiful, sustainable and inclusive street furniture for the transformation of neighbourhoods, the studio aims to further develop and scale this concept, and seeks international partners to join a consortium.
Full Description
Cycling is on the rise in and around European cities. While bicycles have evolved into a wide variety of models and sizes, parking solutions have not kept pace, often resulting in chaotic and uncontrolled use of public space.

This project provides a sustainable, modular solution that combines functionality with aesthetics. The design does not only offer high-quality bicycle parking, but also integrates space for greenery, urban gardening, sports, picnicking, rest areas, and play zones. In this way, the structure goes beyond practical use: it encourages social interaction, strengthens neighbourhood cohesion, and enhances the attractiveness of public spaces.

Built on circular design principles, the system is flexible, modular, and easy to assemble. Residents can actively participate in shaping its function and design, tailoring it to local needs. The simple structure also allows communities to take part in both construction and long-term maintenance.

To apply under the NEB-2025-PARTICIPATION-03 call, the design studio seeks to build a consortium with international partners. The studio will not act as lead partner.

The organization offers:
** A designed toolbox for modular street furniture focussing on bicycle parking and inclusive participation and co-design.
** Links with municipalities for onsite testing and evaluating.
** Further prototyping of the elements of the toolbox and possible layouts, extensions and sustainable, circular and bio-based finishing materials.
