General information

Short Summary
A German startup aims to unlock the potential of agroforestry systems for climate protection and CO2 storage. Cooperation with like-minded European partners like projects or initiatives, farmers, forestry and timber construction which focus on sustainable agriculture, biodiversity protection, climate adaption in rural areas or improvement of soil quality and erosion protection is sought.
Full Description
A startup from Hamburg, northern Germany, focuses on climate protection and CO2 compensation through agroforestry. The SME plants and harvests fast-growing poplars alongside agricultural land in the form of alley cropping systems. The trees absorb a high amount of CO2, which after harvesting remains bound in long term applications, thus qualifies for carbon offset. The business model involves financing of agroforestry projects through carbon compensation measures like donations, climate credits and agroforest as a service within value chains.

The farmers provide the ground and in return have multiple benefits: The trees help agriculture to better adapt to climate change, they stabilize and regenerate the soil, prevent erosion, improve microclimate and water storage, and create a living space both for farm and wild animals. The trees are harvested after a comparably short period of 8 years and, as roots remain in the ground, regenerate quickly, providing long-term benefits to farmers and climate. The raw materials from harvested trees can be used for diverse bioeconomy applications.

The company has already realised 3 pilot projects in Germany and is actively driving forward the development of a DIN standard to certify CO2 capture through agroforestry. To further scale up activities, the company would like to connect to European partners interested to join forces for further exploring and unlocking the potential of agroforestry systems. These can be e.g. agricultural businesses, projects or initiatives focussed on sustainable agriculture, biodiversity protection, climate adaption in rural areas or improvement of soil quality and erosion protection.
