General information

Short Summary
UK SME offers a novel bioaugmentation platform using biocompatible additives that enhance microbial activity in wastewater, fermentation, and bioremediation systems. The company seeks commercial, research, and technical cooperation with partners across water, biofuel, and industrial biotech sectors.
Full Description
A UK-based SME, founded by three PhD researchers in materials science, is developing sustainable solutions to enhance biological processes using smart additives for microbial systems. The core innovation is a family of biocompatible additives that stimulate microbial metabolism, nutrient uptake, and aggregation. These additives are designed to improve the performance of biological treatment systems, microbial fermenters, algae-based processes, and anaerobic digesters . These additives reduce reliance on harmful chemicals and energy-intensive processes, offering a circular solution that repurposes waste to create more additives.

The technology has demonstrated:
• Up to 15× faster phosphate uptake
• 6× increase in microbial growth
• Enhanced floc formation and aggregation
• Non-toxic and low-dose efficiency (effective at ppm concentrations)

The company has secured national innovation funding and support from university innovation funds and accelerator programmes. Their technology is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing bioreactors including wastewater treatment infrastructure, improving pollutant breakdown and the production of bioresources efficiency while reducing operational costs. Target customers include wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), industrial facilities with significant wastewater outputs, and formulators.

The company is looking to collaborate with partners who possess expertise in microbial process optimisation, environmental biotechnology, or biological system integration.

The SME is also open to joint work on grant-funded projects (e.g. Horizon Europe) to explore new applications of their additive platform in adjacent sectors such as agriculture, cosmetics, and biomanufacturing.

The SME is seeking international partners for commercial agreements, research cooperation, and pilot programmes to validate and scale their technology.
Advantages and Innovations
• Enhanced efficiency: Up to 80% acceleration in biological treatment of pollutants including phosphates and organics

• Low energy, low chemical input: Supports energy-saving and chemical-free biological optimisation

• Wide microbial compatibility: Effective with bacteria, algae, and microbial consortia across diverse systems

• Circular production: Additives can be derived from waste biomass such as sludge

• Plug-and-play: Can be dosed into existing processes without equipment changes

• Demonstrated economic viability: Potential to reduce operating costs in WWTPs by up to 20%

• Non-toxic and biodegradable: Designed with sustainability and safety in mind

This solution bridges material science and microbiology to support next-generation biological treatment and bioproduction.
