Italian innovative startup expert in aerospace mechanical design engineering in space liquid propulsion aims at building a consortium of European SME for answering the ESA open call DEMISABLE TANK AND FILLDRAIN VALVE FOR CUBESAT PROPULSION (EXPRO+) expected to be issued in October 2025.
They are searching for a partner for Co-leading, specifying tanks and valves for 16U Cubsat and manufacturing/integrating satellites with tanks&valves for demising simulation and interfaces. - Full Description

The call has the objective to develop a demisable tank and a fill drain valve for CubeSat propulsion systems.
For this matter, it is necessary to investigate the demise behavior of elements of future Cubesat propulsion systems and to develop demisable design solutions to ensure compliance of future missions with the Space Debris Mitigation guidelines.
The call addresses any type of tanks and fill drain valves used on propulsion systems intended for Cubesats up to 16U and tasked to store any type of propellant in solid, liquid or pressurized gas state. The targeted technologies are thus complementary to specific activities that target larger pressurized krypton tanks for LEO small sat constellations.
This call encompasses the following tasks:
- Characterization of the demise behavior of selected typical tanks and fill drain valves through simulations and tests at component and material level to validate and improve the accuracy of the demise predictions models
- Design definition and justification of a demisable tank and demisable fill drain valves
- Breadboard manufacturing and functional tests
- Generation of development plan for follow-up.
The italian start-up has already identified a characterization demise behavior company as well as a company (no aerospace company) for fill and drain and would take over the application preparation, the Coordination management and the tank part.
The italian start-up is therefore in search of a company acting as end user in satellite field, manufacturing and /or integrating such components in order to provide requirement, called hereafter Company n°2. - Advantages and Innovations

The searching italian company already works in space activity and propulsion with knowledge on material for low temperature application or high temperature applications, metal and plastic as well as ceramics. The company is able to act as Leading Partner and knows perfectly the ESA rules.
No commercial fill and drain valves has been identified for the space sector that is publicly documented and qualified as designed specifically for "design for demise" (D4D).
Reputable manufacturers offer reliable space valves for fill/vent/drain but do not report design or qualifications to ensure safe demolition or consumption in atmospheric reentry. - Technical Specification or Expertise Sought

The Leading italian company (Company n°1) intends to apply to the Call with a consortium (main roles and competences) as described below:
1. Company n° 1: Project Coordinator and System Engineering: project management, ESA interface, system requirements definition and integration
2. Company n°2: Co-leading the project in the field of manufacturing or integrating satellites with tanks and valves off the shelves (or not) in order to fulfill support for demising simulation and interfaces
3. Pyro-aerothermal modeling team: experience in reentry, ablation and fragmentation modeling, model calibration with experimental data. High temperature materials testing laboratory: TGA/DSC capability, plasma/arc tests, residue analysis and high temperature (Company n°3)
4. Tank/Structure Designer & Manufacturer: Experience in pressurized tanks for microsatellites, composite materials and AM processes (Company n°1).
5. Valves & Fluidics Specialist: Fill/Drain Valve Design for Space, Leak Testing and Fluid Compatibility. (Company n° 4) including for breadboards and scaleups: prototype production, qualification and supply chain support. (Company n°4)
Company 3 and Company 4 have already been selected.

1) Co leading
2) Ability to specify the tank and valves which are necessary for 16 U Cubsat.
