The LIFE-CHIMERA project addresses one of Europe’s most emission-intensive value chains: lime production. Current processes rely on fossil-fuel calcination and generate unavoidable process CO₂, making the sector hard-to-abate. LIFE-CHIMERA provides an integrated solution combining renewable-powered electrified calcination with permanent CO₂ removal and storage through Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE). Fossil combustion is eliminated, process emissions are avoided, and residual CO₂ is converted into stable bicarbonate and safely released into the Mediterranean Sea under strict Monitoring, Reporting The LIFE-CHIMERA project addresses one of Europe’s most emission-intensive value chains: lime production. Current processes rely on fossil-fuel calcination and generate unavoidable process CO₂, making the sector hard-to-abate. LIFE-CHIMERA provides an integrated solution combining renewable-powered electrified calcination with permanent CO₂ removal and storage through Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE). Fossil combustion is eliminated, process emissions are avoided, and residual CO₂ is converted into stable bicarbonate and safely released into the Mediterranean Sea under strict Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) protocols. This dual climate and ecological action not only ensures a net-negative balance under industrial conditions, but also strengthens marine buffering capacity against acidification, indirectly supporting biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.
The project will build and operate the first pre-commercial demonstrator (1.5 ktpa Ca(OH)₂) in Augusta, Sicily, integrating Limenet’s newly developed electric calciner with an existing mixing module for CO₂ storage. The Mediterranean, a climate and acidification hotspot, provides an ideal testbed.
By coupling deep decarbonisation at source with durable carbon removal, LIFE-CHIMERA creates a scalable, replicable and bankable model for carbon-free lime and beyond (cement, ceramics, refractories). The project will generate robust datasets, improve policy and regulatory acceptance, and deliver immediate climate benefits while laying the foundation for the wider integration of novel CDR technologies within EU climate and environmental frameworks.
The LIFE-CHIMERA consortium integrates technological innovation, scientific research, policy expertise, and industrial replication capacity. This balance ensures that the demonstrator not only validates a breakthrough process, but also generates the scientific evidence and regulatory pathways needed for scale-up. - Sustainable Development Goals

To ensure the replicability of the solution across Europe, the consortium seeks an european partner capable of extending the framework-based scientific and legal analysis on Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) beyond the Italian context.
A national team of Italian experts is already working within the consortium to integrate science and legal frameworks, identifying regulatory and permitting needs for OAE research in Italy—particularly in sensitive coastal areas.
The new partner will complement this work by conducting a comparative assessment of legal, governance, and permitting frameworks for OAE in another EU Member State, contributing to a broader understanding of how European regulatory environments can enable safe, transparent, and responsible OAE deployment.
We are specifically looking for experts in ocean-related law and permitting, with experience in international or EU marine environmental regulations, who can bridge scientific practice and policy development to advance the creation of a coherent, science-based regulatory framework for OAE. - Type and Size of Partner
