General information
- Short Summary
- The Call for Interreg Sudoe phase 2 anticipates the creation of a ZEB (Zero-Energy Building) public building, incorporating renewables into a microgrid. The PT R&D Lab seeks partners from Spain or Southern France with expertise in developing Internet of Things units or possessing advanced knowledge in thermal and electric storage systems to complete the consortium.
- Full Description
-
The project aims to turn a public building into a ZEB, identify the bottlenecks associated to the main public buildings’ specifications (thermal and electric) and pave the way for replication to other public buildings. The basis is a pilot plant with a trigeneration system under development on a public building. The main problems to solve are related with the automation of the energy system having into consideration the external environment, and the development of a sustainable storage system (thermal and electric), especially on the thermal side. This will enable to manage the whole system to harness in an efficient way the heath generated during the summer (and warmer months) for use in the cold periods.
The project, coordinated by the PT Lab, will focus in the research topic nr2. Promote social cohesion and territorial and demographic balance in SUDOE through innovation and transformation of productive sectors; 2.1 Develop and improve research and innovation capacities and the use of advanced technologies. Partners from Spain and South France are sought.
The role of the potential partners should be in the programming of a control system that can integrate the forecast of a set of variables, such as temperature, diret radiation, wind, and others into the internal energy management system (EMS) existing in a building where it was already developed microgrid. Required expertise in the development of Internet of Things units in the renewable energy systems area and similar, and/or advanced know-how in thermal and electric storage systems.
The call will be 2nd Interreg Sudoe call, topic nr 2.1 Develop and improve research and innovation capacities and the use of advanced technologies.
Deadline for submission of the call is 31st of May 2024.
Deadline for EoIs is 17th April 2024. - Advantages and Innovations
-
The basis for this project is one pilot already developed in a previous call for funding where a microgrid integrating a renewable trigeneration system was developed. The pilot plant already developed enables to understand how a micro-grid works and managing the energy consumption of a public building, with special emphasis on managing the thermal comfort of the space and electric production and storing.
It is intended to smartly manage the production of electricity from existing renewable sources (photovoltaic and micro wind) with the thermal and electrical needs of the building.
The heat production from the solar thermal collectors in association with the heat pump is optimized through two modes of operation of the thermal system (economic mode versus direct mode).
The main objective is to minimize the consumption of electricity from the public grid, considering the variation in the price of electricity at different times of the day, making the sustainability target to building zero energy, without compromising indoor thermal comfort.
The main novelty of the idea is the integration of trigenerations systems with both thermal and electrical storage in an electric microgrid capable of managing different types of controllable loads, to adapt energy consumption to local generation without sacrificing the recommended comfort and air quality.
It is intended to develop a control system that can operate the internal energy system considering the external climatic variables.
The whole system and the development of a ZEB building will enable to understand the bottlenecks associated to the main public buildings’ specifications (thermal and electric) and pave the way for replication to other public buildings. On the same way, the infrastructure developed for this end constitutes a Living Lab that can be used in the future in the testing of critical loads for the implementation of measures that lead to ZEB in SUDOE geographies. - Stage of Development

- Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and CommunitiesGoal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
- IPR description
-
Type of partner: SME as referred above, R&D institutions and Universities.
Role of the partner will be mainly related with the development of the control system (operation of the trigeneration system considering the external climatic variables) and collaboration in the study and development of the storage systems (electrical and thermal).
The partnership is, currently to participate in the referred call, as a partner.
