Targeted Call: HORIZON-MISS-2026-02-CANCER-07 – Improve the Quality of Life of older cancer patients
A health-tech startup SME, together with partners already committed to developing a proposal for the targeted Horizon Europe Cancer Mission call, is building a multidisciplinary European consortium. The consortium is currently seeking a leading Cancer Institute, Comprehensive Cancer Centre or University Hospital with a strong oncology department to act as Consortium Coordinator and Clinical/Scientific Lead.
The proposed project will focus on improving the treatment experience and quality of life of cancer patients aged 65+ through an age-sensitive, patient-centred and digitally supported approach.
Older cancer patients may experience significant changes in their physical condition, functional capacity, psychological wellbeing and everyday quality of life during treatment and recovery. Many of these changes occur outside scheduled clinical visits. The project therefore aims to complement existing oncology and primary care pathways by extending appropriate patient follow-up into everyday life and enabling more continuous communication between patients and healthcare professionals.
The project concept currently addresses seven complementary areas:
1. Daily-life monitoring
The project will investigate methods for following relevant physiological, functional and patient-reported indicators during patients' everyday lives, complementing information obtained during conventional clinical visits.
2. Digital follow-up alongside oncology and primary care
A digitally supported follow-up approach will be investigated to improve continuity between hospital-based oncology care, primary care and patients' daily environments, while maintaining appropriate clinical oversight.
3. Quality-of-life and functional assessment
The project will address factors particularly relevant to older cancer patients, including quality of life, functional status, mobility, fatigue, recovery and other age-related factors that may influence the treatment experience.
4. Mental health and psychosocial support
Psychological wellbeing will form an integral part of the proposed approach. The project will investigate how appropriate monitoring, patient feedback and digital support can facilitate timely access to mental health and psychosocial support when required.
5. Patient engagement and feedback
The project aims to strengthen patient participation in the care process through appropriate feedback mechanisms and improved interaction between patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals.
6. Specific monitoring of selected treatment sub-groups
Specific clinical sub-groups may be investigated separately where additional monitoring can provide meaningful information. This includes older cancer patients receiving nuclear medicine or radionuclide-based therapies. For this group, the project intends to explore the complementary use of personal dosimetry and radiation-exposure monitoring, together with clinical, functional and quality-of-life information, in cooperation with nuclear medicine and medical physics specialists.
7. Real-world clinical validation
The overall approach is intended to be evaluated in real-life healthcare environments with participating clinical institutions. The final clinical study design, relevant patient groups, endpoints and validation methodology will be defined jointly by the consortium under the leadership of the sought clinical coordinator.
The project is intended to bring together expertise from oncology, geriatric oncology, primary care, mental health, nuclear medicine, medical physics, clinical research, digital health, patient-reported outcomes and related disciplines. The consortium already includes and is engaging partners with complementary technological, research and healthcare capabilities. At this stage, the principal objective is to identify a strong European clinical institution capable of providing the scientific leadership. - Advantages and Innovations
-
The project combines clinical oncology, mental health expertise and a proprietary deep-tech digital health infrastructure designed to support continuous, real-world and patient-centred follow-up beyond conventional hospital visits.
A key technological foundation is the Umax Intelligence Stack, a modular platform that has reached TRL5 and has already undergone pilot testing in relevant environments. Within the proposed project, the platform will be adapted through the Umaxlife application layer to address the specific needs of older cancer patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals.
A central innovation of the project is the integration of mental health status and therapy-related information into the broader oncology and primary care pathway. Rather than treating psychological wellbeing as an isolated support service, the project will investigate how relevant mental health indicators, patient-reported information and therapy-process data can become part of the longitudinal patient picture used during cancer treatment and follow-up.
The Umax Intelligence Stack is intended to serve as the project’s end-to-end digital backbone, supporting data collection, structuring, integration, management and analysis throughout the full project lifecycle. It will bring together information from wearable sensors, patient-reported outcomes, mental wellbeing assessments, clinical sources and other relevant monitoring systems within a common framework.
An important differentiating element is the use of the technology provider’s own wearable sensing technology, enabling collection of selected physiological signals in daily-life conditions and complementing information available through conventional clinical follow-up.
The existing platform has been developed as a medical-software-oriented digital health architecture, with privacy, data protection and responsible AI considerations embedded by design. Its architecture is designed to support GDPR-compliant data handling. - Technical Specification or Expertise Sought
-
The project is intended to bring together expertise from oncology, geriatric oncology, primary care, mental health, nuclear medicine, medical physics, clinical research, digital health, patient-reported outcomes and related disciplines.
The consortium already includes and is engaging partners with complementary technological, research and healthcare capabilities. At this stage, the principal objective is to identify a strong European clinical institution capable of providing the scientific leadership, clinical research capacity, access to relevant patient populations and overall coordination required for a competitive Horizon Europe proposal.
The selected coordinator will have an important role in shaping the final research concept, clinical methodology and consortium structure together with the existing partners. - Stage of Development
- Lab tested
- Sustainable Development Goals
- Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being
- IPR status
- IPR applied but not yet granted
- IPR notes
- The software, source code, system architecture, algorithms and associated know-how of the Umax Intelligence Stack constitute existing background IP of the technology provider. Umaxlife is a registered trademark and will be one of the brands positioned within the project, while additional new trademark applications are planned. A patent application related to the platform technology has been filed and is currently pending; no patent has yet been granted. The proprietary know-how related to the Senso wearable sensing platform, including its hardware, firmware and system integration, also forms part of the existing background IP.
