Full Description
The French SME, specialized in providing IP strategy support to innovative actors, is seeking to join consortium for HORIZON-WIDERA-2024-ERA-01-07: Capacity building on Intellectual Property (IP) management to support open science, in order to contribute in the following actions:
- Analyzing relevancy of IP management for boosting and being complementary open science,
- Defining tailor-made training materials for trainers based on existing good practices
- Assisting in awareness-raising campaign on fostering open science through IP management.

The French SME is specialized in the promotion of innovation and the development or creation of innovative projects, for any territories through definition and development of IP strategies (from research & development to commercial exploitation). It offers strategic support in the management of intellectual property (IP) and patent portfolios. The company has gathered complementary technical, scientific, legal, managerial and other skills, which are complemented by the company’s extensive network of national and international experts.

The SME can provide, as a partner, the following tasks for any consortium:
• Training on IP awareness for research & innovation (R&I) personal, relating notably to importance of a tailor-made IP management compatible with open science (patent, trade secrets, know-how, copyright, use and exploitation agreements, etc.)
• Methodologies for monitoring IP issued from R&I and third-party patents relating to R&I projects, through IP management tool “PATMAN”, consisting in accessible IP dashboards that help in managing IP rights – related tasks. This customized tool allows notably to optimize the use, the monitoring and the potential valuation of IPR from each partner
• Support in defining specific training materials, modules or courses on IP assets and open science, based on partners’ current good practices for managing IP and enabling access to scientific publication and ensuring scientific results are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (“FAIR principles”), through open licenses policies for example.
Advantages and Innovations
Besides its expertise in providing IP strategy support to innovative actors (technology transfer, exploitation strategy, IP assets evaluation, etc.), the French SME has validated the proof-of-concept of the PatMan SaaS platform, for managing patent proceedings.
This software enables to provide a patent portfolio monitoring dashboard for innovative actors. For this purpose, it includes:
• Collecting updated patent information from public patent database;
• Administrative of non-public and public patent applications, including automatic and manual patent information retrieval, manual creation of actions to be taken to obtain and maintain patents, creation of comments to aid understanding of IP elements
• Automatic export of data created in the database, by innovative actors: consisting of an agenda of actions to be taken, an analysis of priority actions, a summary of the legal status of patents and a description of the patent families presented.

This software enables to present an operational vision of patent information to non-IP specialists, that can also be used by scientific and R&I personal in order to align the IP management with open science principles.

The other existing technological solutions available on the market are complex, and only suitable for people with in-depth IP knowledge. These solutions are very powerful search tools, providing significant detail on patents. However, the administrative aspects are watered down in the mass of information provided, which is moreover public only.
The SaaS platform solution is a management tool providing instant information for rapid strategic decision-making, either for commercial or open science purposes. What's more, the tool enables the management of non-public patent applications, based on information to be transmitted by the users.
