General information
- Short Summary
- A Spanish SME specialized in the biological control of Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) has developed an online respirometer. This technology allows the continuous detection of toxic effluents that destroy microorganisms, preventing them from entering the bioreactor as well as important energy savings. The company is looking for Public entities managing urban WWTPs or engineering companies in charge of industrial WWTPs in different sectors interested in the application of this technology.
- Full Description
-
A Spanish SME specialized in the biological control of wastewater treatment plants has developed an online respirometer designed to interact with the process and serve as a tool for better control and optimization. For this purpose, the device has sensors for oxygen, temperature, pH and Redox.
The activated sludge (AS) process, based on the production of a high-quality effluent using microorganisms to degrade organic contaminants contained in wastewater, is the most widely used biological process for wastewater treatment plants treatment plants (WWTPs).
The variation of influencing factors in WWTPs causes important changes in the microbial composition of AS. Thus, a procedure is required to control biomass's interaction with wastewater components. Respirometry, as a tool for modelling and optimizing the AS process, provides useful information associated with substrate removal and biomass growth.
The Spanish company has developed the first online respirometer that is working in a continuous mode. Unlike other respirometers in the market, aimed at laboratory use, this respirometer is working 24/7 allowing the operator of the plant to assess, control and protect the active sludge process by providing information about the state or the activity of the biomass. It detects the harmful effects of wastewater on microorganisms just when it starts to affect them so that measures can be taken to mitigate the effects and avoid the stability of the activated sludge process. This allows anticipating most of the problems that may affect the process, so guaranteeing, right from the outset that the correct decisions are taken to counter these problems.
Using the online respirometer, the following tests provide the following parameters automatically:
OUR TEST (Global Respirometry): OUR, SOUR
AUR TEST (Nitrification Rate): Rn, AUR
TOX TEST (Toxicity): % Inhibition
DESNITRIFICATION TEST
COD TEST: Biodegradable COD
Cellular Retention Time (MCRT)
Needed Oxygen
Hydraulic Retention Time
This technology meets the main demands of the WWTP operators, allowing:
- The continuous detection of toxic effluents that destroy microorganisms, preventing them from entering the bioreactor.
- Maintaining a high biological performance of the bacteria, which is of great importance for overall plant performance.
- Providing the oxygen supply necessary for the bacteria to function at peak performance at all times which leads to significant energy savings in the aeration process.
The company is looking for Public entities managing Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) or engineering companies in charge of industrial WWTPs in different sectors interested in the application of this technology. - Advantages and Innovations
-
- First online respirometer that allows the control and monitoring of the WWTP in a continuous mode.
-The optimisation of energy costs in wastewater treatment plants accounts for more than 60% of their operating costs. Through this technology it is possible to obtain 15-40% average savings in energy and reagents depending on the current condition of the plant. Pay-backs obtained are reduced, ranging from < 1 to 2 years.
- Configurable with a basic respirometer.
- Control of more than one reactor with the same equipment
- Not affected by the pond level.
- Low maintenance sensors.
- Reproduction of the process in real conditions.
- Can be installed in different points of the process.
- Configured with MODBUS TCP communication, 4-20 or 0-10V outputs, for integration with the plant control
system. Remote control, data base and alerts via email.
- Primary assessment of the sludge.
- Discharge detection.
-Automatic aeration control, based on respirometry: Energy optimisation: both in nitrification and in industrial
plants with and without nitrification.
- SBRs optimisation.
- Automatic control of nutrient dosage. - Stage of Development
- Already on the market
- Sustainable Development Goals
- Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
