A Netherlands based SME designs new bio-catalytic processes for which it develops and produces special polymer beads for making immobilized enzymes. These lead towards a better environment, reduced production costs, improved safety and stability. The company offers its technology for custom polymeric enzyme carriers and enzymatic process design for making efficient immobilized enzymes for bio-catalytic applications in life sciences, pharma, chemical, intermediate, cosmetics and personal care, energy production and environmental solutions.
Finding the right enzyme does not automatically yields an optimal bio-catalytic process. The company’s knowledge of bio-catalysis and organic chemistry allows for designing the production process around the enzyme. Application of immobilization allows for more extreme conditions, full removal and recycling.
Immobilization of enzymes offers easier separation and recyclability thereby making processes technically robust and more cost effective. Additionally process conditions can be chosen with increased flexibility. The objectives when designing the non-catalytic properties are mainly to achieve:
- easy separation of the immobilized enzymes from the reaction mixture
- broad applicability in different reaction media and reaction systems
- general control over the process
- possible use in continuous systems
- purification and selective immobilization (histidine tagged (HIS tag) enzymes)
Enzymes can bind to polymer beads via various binding modes like covalent, adsorption, ionic binding or HIS tag enzymes. For each type op binding mode and for different types of enzymes special polymers have been developed to maximise enzyme activity. For new enzymes new polymer beads can be designed.
Enzymatic process development
The company is specialized in route development comprising asymmetric enzymatic conversions or resolutions. There is an extended experience in process development and scale-up of enzymatically prepared (chiral) compounds. New and proprietary routes to existing compounds can be developed or an existing synthesis can be turned into a scalable process with use of immobilized enzymes.
Many of the company’s immobilized enzymes are used as catalysts in various industrial processes. The company is looking for collaboration with enzyme producers and end users in order to create new enzymatic processes and introduce immobilization to make the process state of the art. A research cooperation or technical cooperation agreement is foreseen. The company is also open to other forms of cooperation.
