A German provider of tailor-made lubricants is seeking experts to help develop solid lubricants for industrial applications (metal industry, automotive industry, cement industry, etc.). The final products shall provide improved performance, easier handling and longer operating life of machine parts at lower costs than liquid lubricants. The company seeks collaborations in the form of advisory services and technical cooperation agreements.

The German company is specialized in high-performance lubrication in several branches including the heavy industry, the automotive industry or logistics (high-bay storage, stacker cranes). The company has a subsidiary in USA and global distribution network. Clients of the company include multinationals such as BMW, Daimler, Ford, VW, Toyota, BASF, Bayer, IKEA, Voestalpine Steel, ArcelorMittal Steel, Hyundai Shipyards, Hitachi, Dr. Oetker etc.

For some new applications areas, the company wants to develop an innovative, quick and simple method of lubricating hot steel surfaces on heavy industrial equipment. This product will replace costlier and less effective liquid spray methods. Solid lubrication bears great market potential, as it has several advantages over conventional liquid lubrication. To name some examples: high-temperature stability, the good adhesion on metal surfaces, the easy application and longevity allow for reduced machine downtimes and therefore higher outputs.

Product application will result in substantial cost-savings in labor hours for end-users, as well as double the lives of the lubricated machine elements due to higher performance of the lubricants. Especially suitable for rotating kilns and furnaces, extrusion machinery, but there could potentially be many other industrial applications.

The company's scope is the continuous improvement of existing technologies and the development of novel products with excellent performance that meet the needs of its costumers. Potential partners should be specialised in the development and testing of materials used for lubrication or very experienced practically-oriented chemists. They should have access to appropriate testing and production facilities to carry out the development of the solid lubricant to market maturity. Either a service agreement or a technical cooperation agreement can be set up.

Technical Specification or Expertise Sought

Cooperation sought:
Expert know-how of the partner in the following areas is crucial for a successful product development: i) determination/fixing of particle size distributions ii) determination of the adhesion on rough/smooth metal surfaces iii) determination/fixing of melting points/self-ignition temperatures iv) determination of optimal coefficient of friction (dry-to-dry flat metal surfaces in a sliding relationship) using internationally recognized standards. v) prevent metal seizing vi) optimisation of production processes (flow rate, molding, hardening time) The ideal solid lubricant should have the following characteristics: i) lowest possible friction coefficient ii) instant melting at about 75 °C when applied iii) non-toxic fire retardant/ self-ignition above 525 deg. C iv) product should not leak/ leave residues when stored v) no slippery/greasy surface vi) product components must meet the definition of non-hazardous materials (European Council Directive 67/548/EEC)

Partner sought

Cooperation area:
The company is looking for institutes, R&D entities and companies with long-term experience in designing, developing and testing organic/inorganic materials. The solid lubricants may consist of high viscosity thickeners and solid particles. The company has already developed some formulas and produced prototypes of solid lubricants. The ideal partner possesses appropriate testing and production facilities to take over the last development stages of the product to market maturity. Following collaboration types are envisaged: - services agreements: the partner provides the company with the services regarding the development and testing of the solid lubricants. If the partner is able to produce the product, a service agreement for the production can be negotiated - technical cooperation agreement: both partners will cooperate closely to develop a marketable product
