Summary

Summary:
A German university developed an optical data transmission system that increases the transmission capacity via fiber optics by using several orthogonal modes. The university offers a license and a technical cooperation agreement.

Description

Description:

In very thin waveguides only one mode can propagate, in thicker waveguides several modes are possible. If several modes are transmitted, each mode can transmit data and the data flow is increased.

A German university now developed such an optical transmission system:

A plurality of signals of different modes per wavelength is generated on the transmitter side. The signals are then combined via a mode multiplexer and a wavelength division multiplexer and coupled to a fiber. The order of multiplexing is freely selectable. The transmission and the optical amplification are performed in multimode technology. On the receiver side, the signals are separated with a wavelength demultiplexer and a mode demultiplexer and fed to the corresponding channels. Again, the sequence of demultiplexing is selectable.

Since during transmission coupling of the modes can occur, the signals are processed before further processing in order to remove the interference components and to increase signal quality.

The offer is directed at companies in the telecommunications industry. The university offers a license and a technical cooperation agreement in order to develop the system to market maturity.

Advantages & innovations

Cooperation plus value:
In comparison to current optical transmission systems this invention increases the transmission capacity. Furthermore it is lower priced, compatible to existing systems and allows a simple system change.

Partner sought

Cooperation area:
The offer is directed at companies in the telecommunications industry. This transmission system is not necessarily suitable for domestic use, but for large transmission distances (backbone). The university offers a license for implementation and a technical cooperation agreement. The technical cooperation aims at joint further development and projects. The inventors at the German university would provide support for the development to market maturity.
