An Italian SME has developed, over more than fifteen years of activity, a very competitive solution for creating impressive "landscapes" of lights, for indoor and outdoor use, by coupling architectural projectors and special lens filters ("gobos").
The company started in 2002 with the production of high quality, customised gobos to be used with general purpose projectors, and is now the leading company in Italy and one of the world's leading gobos producers.
In addition, over the years, the company has developed its own line of dedicated projectors, with significant advantages in terms of reduced costs and energy consumption, compact size and ease of setup, light weight, robustness.
The company, originally located in the south of Italy, has opened a second production site in the north of Italy and it is directly present abroad with two production sites in France and California, and with a sales office in Germany.
Gobos are very thin dichroic glass filters or metal discs that are used to project images, texts, logos, including very colourful pictures, with high precision on very large surfaces (eg. walls, buildings, squares, stairs, etc.) and in different situations (eg. fairs, ceremonies, meetings, local festivals, safety signs, etc.), possibly with dynamic effects (eg. rain effect). The overall solution is very effective for promotion, entertainment and artistic communication, starting from single projections up to the creation of complex itineraries and landscapes, using multiple projectors and gobos, The company has a catalogue with more than 1000 standard gobos, grouped by themes, to be used for the creation of various scenes and is able to create customized gobos upon request with very short-term delivery.
Currently, the design and customisation of gobos is done using a clean laser-etching process on dichroic filters, with quality materials and digital manufacturing techniques ensuring high brighteness, fidelity and colour brilliance, no imperfections and unwanted reflections and with a low environmental impact. Also, innovative materials and production processes make gobos resistant to very high temperatures (over 450°C).
At present, the basic lenses to produce gobos of different sizes are cut out of large glasses using micro-grinding machines. This step could be enhanced in overall speed, material usage and edge quality after cutting by using laser technologies but, so far, the company has not found an adequate solution. Specifically, the solution should be able to achieve a minimum cutting speed of 2mm/sec, for lenses with diameter from 5mm to 60mm or more, by optimizing cut of rectangular plates of different sizes, tipically 110x160mm, and clearly with a very good edge quality after cutting. Glasses are borosilicate with a thickness from 0.55mm to 2mm.
The company is looking for industrial or academic partners that are able to provide a thourough analysis of the issue to identify a suitable technical solution.
Partners should have a specific know-how on laser technologies and related industrial applications.
In case of an existing or easily customisable solution, the companies will establish a commercial agreement with technical assistance.
If the solution is to be developed, the company will collaborate under a technical cooperation agreement in the design and test of the new machine while the other partner will carry out the tecnical development.
