As hydrogen is emerging as a future energy source capable of
coping with air pollution and global warming, water decomposition that can produce hydrogen in an environmentally friendly manner is attracting attention. However, because such method of producing hydrogen via water electrolysis is high cost, there has been a difficulty of commercialization.

For example, a polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis that involves a catalytic reaction is delayed in commercialization due to the usage of expensive noble metal oxide catalysts and its low stability. As a result, this not only causes the price of the hydrogen generator to increase, but also requires 10 times more catalysts than the fuel cell.

Thus, for the commercialization of hydrogen generators, it is necessary to reduce the use amount of noble metal oxide catalysts and eventually develop nano-catalyst synthesis technology and high durability conductive supporter which will increase energy efficiency. The Korean company came up with the innovative strategy to solve this matter:

In contrast to the existing water-splitting catalysts synthesized by Adam's Fusion method, the company has developed a new synthetic process that combines the advantages of Spray Pyrolysis process and Adam's Fusion process. The conventional heat treatment method was difficult to disperse because IrO2 nanoparticles were easily aggregated, but the developed process greatly improves the dispersity of the catalyst by heat treatment in the state of fine spray. Thus, the utilization of the catalyst is improved by putting a large surface area of the catalyst particles on the conductive supporter. (1 mg/cm² or less)
