Summary

Summary:
A Russian institute has developed a technology for multi-layer coating on the surface of implant organs, synthesizing the protective properties of nanoparticles and biopolymers. Innovative coatings can be used as an antibacterial modifier of the implant, allowing acceleration of its implantation by reducing the risks of concomitant inflammation. The institute is looking for foreign partners to conclude a commercial agreement with technical assistance.

Description

Description:

The Russian Research institute was founded in 1916. The University has developed an innovative technical technology for multi-layer coating on the surface of implant organs, synthesizing the protective properties of nanoparticles and biopolymers.
Titanium implants are widely used in traumatology and orthopedics. The major part of all operations in traumatology is conducted on potentially infected wounds. The only way to deal with infections is the preparatory treatment of wounds with antibiotics before implantation. In the end, there is a chance of rejection of titanium implant, and a number of techniques was developed to improve the osseointegration process, including preparatory various treatment and coatings of implants. However, none of these methods provide treatment of implant-tissue contact area with medicines, as there is a problem of delivery of sufficient amount of drugs into the targeted area. Such treatment can significantly reduce the chances of infection and inflammation, leading to lower chances of implantation failure.
The developed technology is designed for the production of medicinal and protective biodegradable matrices containing drugs (antibiotics) and for further coating of titanium implants. The final products are implants made of titanium with a biopolymer coating that gradually releases a drug for a long time period from days to several weeks. This provides constant treatment of the contact area with a drug leading to successful osseointegration.
Implants with the coating based on biopolymers are designed for various kinds of surgery and transplantation centers, as well as for multi-disciplinary clinics that have specialized traumatology and orthopedics unit.
Titanium implants manufacturers are sought for a commercial agreement with technical assistance. The institute is ready to sell the technology and provide technical support in establishing production technology, personnel training, and so on.

Advantages & innovations

Cooperation plus value:
Studies on small lab animals have shown that the developed matrix is not toxic. It is fully biocompatible, and biodegradable. The matrix degrades completely after a several months period (the exact period of full dissolving depends on matrix composition and type of treated tissue). Prototypes of implants with a polymer coating containing an antibiotic (gentamicin) are available for demonstration. The coating material is based on modified chitosan. The process of formation of the protective shell on the surface of titanium plates and its properties has been thoroughly investigated, and high adhesion of the coating to the surface of titanium plates has been achieved. Antibacterial properties of coatings have been studied using Staphylococcus Aureus as a reference.

Partner sought

Cooperation area:
Type: SMEs, large companies, medical scientific universities, medical companies, medical device developer Role: in accordance with the commercial agreement with technical assistance, the role of a potential partner is to help the Russian institute to develop and improve the technology. Also, a potential partner will have to provide assistance in launching this technology on the foreign market. A potential partner should be interested and ready to expand the range of their products and purchase the technology of biopolymer medical coatings, as well as receive any technical support from the Russian side
