With expert guidance, a medical and digital farming company in Lombardy transformed its sustainability ambitions into certified action and national recognition. The case shows how strategy, funding, and visibility can help SMEs lead the way.
Sustainability has become a core expectation for SMEs across Europe. Clients, funders, and regional authorities are all pushing for companies to demonstrate a real commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
For Dinamica Generale, a precision farming company also operating in the medical sector and based in Italy's Lombardy region, these principles were already part of the culture. However, to stay competitive and expand its impact, the company needed to move from informal efforts to a structured environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy.
That shift began in 2022 when Dinamica Generale reached out to the Enterprise Europe Network for guidance. With tailored support from Enterprise Europe Network member FAST, the company took measurable steps to embed sustainability in every part of its operation, leading to certifications, awards, and broader visibility in Italy and beyond.
Building a sustainable business model in digital agriculture
Dinamica Generale develops advanced digital solutions for the agriculture and livestock sectors. Long before sustainability became a regulatory concern, the company had already embraced environmentally conscious practices and earned multiple ISO certifications. However, as expectations around ESG grew, management recognised the need for a formal road map that would align values with measurable performance.
In 2022, the company contacted the Italian Network partner FAST for strategic support. FAST proposed a clear plan, starting with the appointment of a dedicated sustainability manager, and introduced the ECOMATE tool to help assess the company's ESG rating. The results revealed both strengths and gaps, guiding the development of a structured improvement strategy.
With a framework in place, Dinamica Generale began formalising internal procedures and communicating sustainability goals more effectively across departments. One of the first milestones came when the Lombardy Region launched a co-financed scheme to promote gender equality certification. FAST identified the opportunity and supported the company in its successful application. In 2023, Dinamica Generale was awarded the UNI/PdR 125:2022 Gender Equality Certification, along with a regional voucher that offset associated costs.

"The insight we gained is now guiding our actions to ensure continuously enhanced ESG performance."
Driving ESG visibility and recognition through innovation and support
As its internal transformation progressed, Dinamica Generale began to gain recognition beyond company walls. In 2024, it was selected for the DigiSafeWell Award, an initiative that celebrated SMEs based in the Lombardy region using digital tools to enhance workplace safety and well-being. The company's winning solution – a robotic system that reduces physical strain and supports inclusivity in manual work – reflected both innovation and commitment to social responsibility.
The award came with visibility tools: a professional video showcasing the company's solution as well as strategic consultancy to refine its sustainability messaging. These tools boosted brand reputation and sparked new interest from external stakeholders.
Further validation followed. INAIL, Italy's national body for workplace safety and a member of the award jury, invited Dinamica Generale to apply for the Healthy Workplaces Good Practice Awards organised by EU-OSHA. The company attended the 2025 ceremony in Bilbao and was featured in an INAIL-published fact sheet on workplace digital innovation and health.
According to Angela Pulvirenti of FAST, the company stands as a model of what SMEs can achieve with sustained commitment and the right kind of support: "The company has been able to seize the opportunities offered by Enterprise Europe Network, demonstrating high commitment and motivation."
With continued backing from the Network, Dinamica Generale is now exploring national and EU-level funding opportunities to further scale its digital offering and deepen its sustainability performance, proof that small businesses can drive meaningful change.
