A spin-off from a university in Germany offers new research technologies for conducting behavioral studies for scientists or market research instiutes based on a successful app that has been launched in 2014. Their software package allows their clients to independently record smartphone behavior of study participants, run statistical analyses, correlate & visualize data on a platform. They are looking to partner with universities or market research firms on a research or tech cooperation basis.
Smartphones generate a plethora of data and thus provide rich insights into the lives of their owners. So far, only Big-Tech such as Google & Facebook benefited from these capabilities; academic researchers as well as regular market research institutes remained excluded. A start-up from a university in Germany now offers new research technologies for market or opinion research as well as for conducting behavioral studies for social scientists. Their software package allows researchers or B2B clients such as market research institutes to independently record smartphone behavior of study-participants, run statistical analyses, correlate and visualize data on a platform. It is a General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliant company whose data privacy concept has been created by a certified German lawyer for IT-law. All servers are secure & hosted in Germany. The start-up would either like to be cooperation partner for new research studies or act as an IT-service provider for above mentioned institues on a research or technical cooperation agreement basis. This spin-off originated in a unique study of the behavior of 500.000 smartphone users and the correlating app has been running succesfully since 2014.
There are a number of existing smartphone apps that track smartphone use, however, these give direct feedback to the client and are used for B2C purposes. The start-up instead provides a full-stack solution, from data collection (via app or wearable such as fitbit) to analysis (over their platform for researchers) for their B2B clients.
This includes the following wide variety of data:
• screen data (i.e. time on smartphone, number of unlocking)
• app data (i.e. time spent in each app)
• GPS data (i.e. distance, locations)
• data provided throught time-triggered questionnaires (i.e. questions that will appear through the app during the study)
• wearables data (such as fitbit)
- product with basic features available
- more features under development/ under testing (i.e. fitbit)
The spin-off is looking for universities, institutes, and companies who are are interested in new technologies to study human behavior. The technology can be used by various social scientists and in the following areas:
• Human Biology
• Market & Consumer Research
• Behavioral Economics
• Human Geography
• Human Science
• Communication Design
• Political Sciences
The partner should be interested in studying a specific field of human behavior. Either the partner is leading the study and the spin-off provides IT-service only, or they may conduct a specific field study together on the basis of a technical or research cooperation agreement.
