Spanish technology centre has developed comprehensive district energy retrofitting methodology. This holistic and customizable method reduces the economic risks of large-scale renovation projects and facilitates the planning, implementation, management of such energy projects. The methodology has been tested at district level on three demonstration sites.
Partnerships sought are service and research cooperation agreement with any type of entity interested in district energy retrofitting
Spanish horizontally integrated technology centre specialized in offering global solutions to companies. It provides them since 1994 in developments, processes, systems and products. It operates in five economic sectors: industry, energy and environment, construction and infrastructure, agrofood, health and quality of life.
Energy area of Spanish technology centre has developed, together with some partners, a holistic district energy retrofitting methodology in the frame of an European Union funded project. Comprehensive planning and selection of appropriate technologies are the most important factors to reduce economic risks and to guarantee the desired energy performance, especially for large-scale renovation processes.
It guarantees the successful planning and implementation of integrated retrofitting projects at district level and allows to systematically designing complex renovation projects. Moreover, it integrates District Sustainability Indicators (DSI), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) as well as energy and life cycle simulation tools for selecting the most suitable combination of energy conservation measures for retrofitting interventions.
The methodology can improve the decision-making process in a district retrofitting project and obtain best results for district retrofitting by tracking the project goals throughout the complete process and by establishing stakeholders' responsibilities. It reduces personal costs due to time savings, particularly in the design and decision-making process, and improves the organizational tasks and communication workflows before, during and after the intervention.
The district energy retrofitting design methodology has been tested for 3 demonstration sites and the solution will be further optimized and tailored even better to end-user needs through additional use cases.
The methodology can be applied for:
• strategic energy planning of districts
• energy-efficient building retrofitting selection
• building retrofitting management
• design of new buildings under a holistic energy-efficient approach
• evaluation, validation and reinforcement of tendering and bidding proposals
• evaluation of compliance with initial energy objectives after intervention and proposition of actions to improve critical aspects during the building/district lifespan
- For services agreement the Spanish centre is looking for building companies, design companies, building owners or municipalities interested in implementing the methodology for specific retrofitting activities in real size scale.
- The technology centre is also interested in research cooperation agreement with entities (companies or public administration) interested in further development of this methodology to be tested and analysed further under specific research calls.
o ICT companies could be involved for implementing tools using the developed methodology as starting point
o Municipalities could validate the methodology at city level and collaborate in the redefinition to make it adaptable for other different dimensions.
The methodology proposed is holistic, covering many aspects such as energy, economic, sustainability, comfort, social or urban aspects. As it is modular, customizable and easily scalable.
Currently, no other commercially tools are available for a comprehensive district retrofitting design considering aspects from so many analysed fields.
It reduces costs and risks: avoiding mistakes that occur in the construction phase due to a misconceived design, detecting system failures by constantly gathering information, and saves personnel hours and unnecessary costs due to previous analysis using simulation data.
It can overcome technical barriers of large scale retrofitting activities assuring targets that are reached within specified time and cost frames and required quality.
Partners interested in applying the methodology for specific retrofitting activities in real size scale, such as building companies, building design companies, building owners or municipalities. A partner with a retrofitting idea can test the result that would be obtained in terms of energy, environmental, economic, comfort, social and urban improvement before starting the construction works.
-Research cooperation agreement:
A district for retrofitting can be analyzed and studied under specific research calls. The methodology has been deployed in three real demonstration cases but could be further tested. Additionally ICT companies could be involved for implementing tools using the developed methodology as starting point.
