A Slovenian company has developed an innovative in-wheel electric motor, with permanent magnets and an integrated controller inside the wheel, using a simple design ready for serial production. The patented modular multiphase motor technology, with power levels from 1 to 15 kilowatts, is ready for various light and small e-mobility applications. The Slovenian company is looking for licensing or joint venture partners, to implement the advanced technology into e-mobility applications.
A Slovenian company is a developer and producer of advanced electromagnetic propulsion solutions for light electric mobility. Since their foundation in 2010 they have combined interdisciplinary expertise from different technical fields. The company covers all phases of development and production from the idea to the final product. Their main expertise is the custom electric motor design and powertrain development along with standard in-wheel motors. The company is involved in several projects spanning electric drive development for an electric scooter, electric three-wheelers and a small electric car. They cooperate with Slovenian universities and with foreign research institutes. The expert team with five PhDs holds 22 patents and 14 awards. The patented new drive technology was recognized by the EU Commission as one of the most disruptive future technologies and was financed with the FTI programme.
Their main innovation is the in-wheel (or direct) electric motor with permanent magnets. A patented modular multiphase technology integrates modular motor controller and electric motor inside the wheel. This simple and compact solution for the e-mobility market has a wide range of applications for different types of two-, three- and four-wheelers. Examples of applications are electric bikes, electric scooters, e-rickshaws, electric and micro-cars, hybrid vehicles, motorbikes, golf carts, agricultural and industrial vehicles.
The new motor allows designs of different power. In general, standard motors power levels are from 1 to 15 kilowatts (kW). However, different custom designed options are possible even up to 120 kW, voltage level from 48 to 100 volts, motor weight from 3 to 20 kg, depending on the tire size (from 10’’ to 14’’ tire). The motor controller is fully integrated and air cooling system is mostly used. Customized complete electric drive solutions with battery packs adapted to the needs of the clients are also available.
The company has its own production facilities, but it would like to manufacture in-wheel electric motor for the light e-mobility application on a larger scale and in other countries. The company is interested in cooperation with other industrial and/or research and development partners. They would implement the in-wheel drive technology into their e-mobility application or future electric vehicle as a final product or as a research & development project. The company is envisioning different forms of cooperation with partners.
First possible form of cooperation is a licencing agreement. This type of cooperation might cover manufacturing of larger quantities of in-wheel motors where the company will provide all necessary information and specifications of the technology. Partner should have experience in mass production of brushless electric motors, expert knowledge and manufacturing technology facilities.
The second possible form of cooperation is a joint venture agreement with industrial or research partner for common light electric vehicle development using the company’s in-wheel drive technology. Industrial partner should be experienced producer of electric vehicles. The company will support partner with the motor technology and custom development services and with production of in-wheel drives for the common project.
The main innovation of the solution is a complete, but simple electric motor with integrated motor controller inside the wheel, while other solutions on the market have external controllers. The innovation enables an improved agility of the vehicle, while at the same time the solution proved to be reliable with redundancy and additional safety. Complete electric drive consists of modular motor controller, magnets, concentrated winding, and magnetic core with silicon steel and position sensor. Motor performance:
- low cogging torque (below 0.1 %),
- battery-to-wheel efficiency up to 92 %,
- higher starting torque (up to 25%).
Company has in-house research and development department and they can provide customized solutions for clients in a reasonable time.
Solution has also the following advantages:
- simple design with low weight and costs
- simple installation and interface to the vehicle system
- safe low voltage operation (below 75 V direct current)
- regenerative braking and up to 10% reduced energy consumption
- minimized electromagnetic emission with ten times lower emission to standard solution.
The technology is completely developed for 4 kW and 6 kW in-wheel drive for small serial production of 10,000 pieces per year. Other power levels are into development with a serial production start in 2019 and 2020 for wide range of light electric vehicle applications of two-, three-, and four-wheelers.
The company is interested in cooperation with experienced producers of brushless electric motors under licence agreement. The partners sought should have knowledge of mass production and required facilities for manufacturing larger quantities of the in-wheel motor. Produced motors will be used in two, three or four wheel light e-vehicle applications. Company will provide required technical information and specifications of the technology under licensing agreement.
Additionally, company is looking for industrial producers or/and research & development partners for common light electric vehicle development under joint venture agreement. Partners sought will eventually become suppliers of the developed e-vehicle. The company will support partner with the motor technology and custom development services and with production of in-wheel drives for the common project.
