An Italian startup, based in Milan, has designed and patented a new multifunctional turbine which can produce electrical energy from the energy of any fluid under pressure and function as a compressor or hydraulic pump.
Scientific and industrial partners are sought for further development and applications under a technical cooperation, research or joint venture agreement.
An Italian start up based in Milan patented a new multifunctional turbine able to produce electricity powered by any fluid under pressure, such as water, compressed air, gas, steam, nitrogen, etc. If powered by electricity it works as a compressor or a hydraulic pump.
The novelty lies in the fact that the turbine has a toroidal shape and is wound around a toroidal solenoid and / or coils. It has a circular rotor that rotates inside the toroid whose hydraulic vanes contain each a magnet . When turning all together they make the solenoid produce electricity. An external electric generator is not required because it is included in the toroidal turbine.
The turbine can work with any fluid under pressure, while the other traditional turbines can work with a single fluid . Moreover it is reversible, if feeding the solenoids with electric energy the rotor turns functioning as a hydraulic pump or compressor.
The turbine can be used to produce low cost electricity in the hydroelectric sector, in the thermoelectric sector with high pressure steam, using compressed air or nitrogen and other waste gases for the production of oxygen and hydrogen, etc.
All these applications involve a substantial reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) and therefore have an environmental positive impact as the turbine does not burn any gas and does not produce CO2.
The turbine can be used to produce electricity using high gas pressures in pipelines transporting gas even at 180bar pressure.
Instead of using inert valves, which just lower the gas pressure, by using the turbine the gas enters at high pressure, turns the rotor that produces electricity and comes out of the turbine with a lower pressure, so electricity is produced without burning the gas.
The start up is looking for scientific partners for going further in testing applications with different pressurized fluids under a technology/research cooperation .
Partner for industrial applications under a joint venture agreement are welcome as well.
In comparison with other turbines available in the market the proposed one has smaller dimensions and requires simple maintenance.
Dismantling and recovery of materials at the end of life are easy to perform.
The electric generator is included in the turbine itself and therefore the turbine has lower costs than traditional ones. When used as a compressor or hydraulic pump, electrical consumption is much lower and has better efficiency.
