A Greek SME working in the field of Space presents an innovative multi-magnetometer to be used for testing devices mainly for Space applications. A magnetometer is an instrument that measures magnetism—either the magnetization of a magnetic material like a ferromagnet, or the direction, strength, or relative change of a magnetic field at a particular location. The problem for testing devices for their magnetic field with single magnetometer is the fact that the earth’s magnetic field affects the measurement a lot. Another problem is that a single magnetometer should be placed precisely in various positions in order to take measurements of the magnetic field in all directions.
The Greek company presents a multi-magnetometer that uses 12 ﬁxed magnetometers to measure, with high accuracy, the magnetic ﬁeld produced by any equipment under testing. The device is operational and already installed at ESA for measuring the magnetic field of various equipment items. The measurement is taking place simultaneously, for all magnetometers consisting the device, in a snapshot. The magnetometer is designed aﬅer thorough study of various possible multi-magnetometer arrangements, taking into consideration the optimum number of magnetometers and their relative positions, in order to achieve measurement time below 1 second, minimum measurement uncertainty and the maximum reproducibility of results. The device eliminates utilization of Helmholtz coils to cancel earth’s magnetic ﬁeld.
The magnetometer instantly captures the equipment's magnetic field (it’s magnetic signature) in the presence of the earth’s magnetic field. A software application collects all the above measurements, apply appropriate filters (if desired) and exports final results to certain data formats. The application incorporates all necessary functionality to execute the measurement test procedure, such as magnetometers’ data acquisition and ﬁltering, but also position calibration of the magnetometers. The soﬅware provides an interface to common calculating solvers and interfaces with common programming environments applications.
Total measurement time to characterize the equipment under testing is about one second so as to avoid influence of ambient field variations. The device achieves better quality measurements to help magnetic dipole modelling methodologies produce reliable results.
