An Italian company offers a new ashes scattering service integrated with forestry services, in respect of the person, of the territory and of nature. The service consists in giving customers their resting place near a tree, located in a forest rented by the company from private owners and/or public entities, at the foot of which their ashes will be buried. They are proposing as partner or case study in a research cooperation agreement.
The company is an innovative ash scattering service integrated with forestry services, in respect of the person, of the territory and of nature. The service consists of giving their customers resting place near a tree, located in a forest rented by the company from private owners and/or public entities, at the foot of which their ashes will be buried. The proceed will be used by the company to improve the service and for the preservation of the forest where trees are located or in other wooded areas.
The development of the activity has lead to a research that deals with following topics:
- Circular Economy: it is a peculiar case of circular economy for two main reasons:
1) normally considered a product (wood / biomass) the tree becomes the fulcrum for the provision of a service, multiplying its economic value
2) it leverages environmental protection as a factor of local development, since it re-invests its profits not only for the wooded areas used in commemorative purposes and for the progressive improvement of its service, but also for recovery projects and exploitation of other natural public areas
The project is resilient in both contents (what it provides as natural burial service and how the profits are re-invested through investment in environmental protection projects) and in the process of involving other public and private entities (about awareness of cultural issues such as the commemoration and above all about practical aspects such as innovation of personal services and the widespread project benefits among different stakeholders)
- Process Innovation
The research deals with the problems and opportunities related to contacts and agreements with the public sector and the new ways of public - private partnerships for the project implementation.
The project responds to today's social needs not effectively guaranteed either by the market or by the public authorities: low supply of plural and alternative solutions to traditional burials, spiritual needs of individuals through a wider freedom of choice of where to spend the afterlife, safeguarding land through conservative forestry management for the prevention of hydrogeological risks, repopulation of rural areas often considered marginal. These needs are not guaranteed nowadays because of chronic problems of inefficiency and / or inadequacy of municipal financial resources for both the burial service and for forest management. The project is therefore able to respond to perceived needs that has not been satisfied yet: it is completely in line with a development strategy that is simultaneously sustainable from three points of view: economic, environmental and social.
Social Innovation: as traditionally conceived and perceived, the cemetery results in consumption and growing waterproofing of the soil resources, leading to an increased landslide risk. The strong innovation inherent in the project consists of a new method of conceiving the cemetery which decreases the need for traditional expansion through the payment of an alternative service by the members, who fund at the same time the management and the safety of the forest.
Social Inclusion and Cohesion: the project increases the society opportunities to choose to contribute -even once deceased - to ensure high standards of land management and thus quality of life. It is also able to increase the involvement of communities pertaining to the chosen wooded areas, offering employment opportunities to local residents and giving new function in depressed areas.
