An Italian SME, active in the field of wellness and now entering the medical devices sector thanks to an SME Instrument Phase 2 project, has developed an innovative anti-decubitus bed with a non-invasive remote monitoring solution for the early diagnosis of decubitus ulcers, prevention and suitable treatment.
They are looking for manufacturing agreement and commercial agreement (with technical assistance) with producers of hospital equipment and/or medical devices.
The Italian SME has already achieved a positive outcome of the Phase 1 of the SME Instrument (feasibility study and business plan) and as a beneficiary of Phase 2 is now starting the pre-industialization and go-to-market phase. The project goal is to develop and clinically validate a non-invasive remote monitoring solution for the early diagnoses of decubitus ulcers through prevention and suitable treatment integrated in an innovative anti-decubitus system.
Spurred by the hefty bill and lack of resources, hospitals and in particular their innovation units are continuously looking for new strategies to minimize the incidence of decubitus ulcers (DeU).
Prevention and early diagnosis are the main priority with DeU. While 95% of all DeU are considered preventable, no concluding evidence exists that current devices are effective in the prevention of DeU. Indeed, 38,5% of DeU appeared while using any of current devices. The most common solution is the use of alternating pressure mattress, able to guarantee anti-decubitus with pneumatic movements of loading and unloading of the involved body area, but not enough to satisfy the urgent demand due to fourfold drawback: it fails in controlling wound microclimate, it fails in controlling and improving tissue viability, it doesn't provide real time data and it doesn't analyze other critical biomarkers. In addition, usually hospitals provide alternating pressure mattresses just for high risk patients (long-term/intensive care units) not allowing the preventive use spread to all patients at risk of developing pressure sores.
This project takes advantage of this niche market offering an innovative medical technological device for the prevention, the early diagnosis and the suitable treatment of DeU diseases improving the living conditions of patients with reduced mobility.
The new product will satisfy the limits of currents products through technological solutions and real-time monitoring sensors of the new product.
The company has already got in touch and started structured collaborations with Italian and European hospitals based on the developments so far reached within this project before and during the successful Phase 1.
The company is protected under patent regime through a number of patents for invention.

The Italian company is looking for industrial partners to start a manufacturing and commercial collaboration with technical assistance in order to develop, validate and bring to the market the system.
The system is based on a non-invasive remote monitoring solution (that allows an early diagnose of decubitus ulcers) and an innovative matress that, together with a mechanical system, prevent the creation of the ulcers.
Another important advantage with the collaboration with the Italian company is done by the Phase 2 of the SME Instrument that will cover the validation, certification and pre-industialization phases.
The validation and pre-industrialization phase is covered by the SME Instrument Phase 2 budget.
The company is looking for producers of hospital beds for manufacturing and production of the new medical device and/or distributors of hospital equipments for commercialization and distribution.
