Magnetic pulse technology for smoothing dents on automobile body
TORU20171219005
A Russian company together with a university is developing a technology for metal stretching and dents smoothing on automobile body. The technology allows stretching metal without access to the other side of metal sheet. The company is looking for partners for improvement of the technology, creation of a test sample, and organization of small-batch production of the equipment.The company is ready to sign services agreement, joint venture agreement.
At the present time when car body works are performed by traditional means it is necessary to demount the detail to provide access to its inner side. It is also possible to smooth dents without detail demounting but in this case welding is used and paint coating will be damaged. Vacuum method of dents smoothing allows avoiding both of the above mentioned disadvantages but it is effective only for small dents because it provides maximum pressure of 1 bar only.
The Russian company has developed a new technology. Magnetic pulse treatment of metals allows performing various operations with metal details. Use of complex shape pulse (oppositely directed slow and fast parts) allows smoothing dents on car bodies. Produced pressure can reach 100 bar, which greatly surpasses possibility of vacuum technology for dents smoothing. While treatment it is not necessary to disassemble cars, because access to the inner side of body parts is not needed. While developing of the technology the authors have solved a series of technical problems: interaction of powerful electricity pulse sources with joint loading (inductor), a type of inductor that would provide maximum effectiveness while stretching, and so on.
The Russian company in cooperation with physics-technological university is engaged in development of strong magnetic pulse equipment (solenoids, inductors, metering technologies, etc.) and research in strong magnetic fields. The offered project is devoted to creation of equipment for magnetic pulse technology for smoothing dents on automobile body. When a metal sheet (car detail) is affected by a complex-shape strong magnetic impulse field it is drawn towards inductor. This technology has high productivity (up to 1 impulse per minute) and makes possible smoothing difficult dents. Earlier a similar technology was used for smoothing dents on aircrafts, but to adapt it to steel details (which have low conductivity) there were several technical problems to be solved. Now the company has finished 2 scientific-and-research projects and made a working sample of device for dents smoothing was created.

Also the company gained support for its project for research of fundamental basics of magnetic pulse metal stretching. It is supposed to develop cooperation in the following areas: - joint research of deformation process of complicated dents - producing a sample of dents smoothing device and organization of small-batch production. The company is also engaged in the development of powerful magnetic pulse system, measuring equipment for magnetic pulse fields, and technology for production of solenoids and inductors made from micro-composite conductor Cu-Nb. The equipment that is being developed is used for scientific research (laboratory units for powerful magnetic fields) and in technological systems (magnetic pulse materials treatment).
Impact of strong complex shape magnetic pulse field allows smoothing dents on car body without access to the inner side of body details, and not damaging car’s paint coating. There are used modern materials for making inductors: high-modulus para-armid fiber and micro-composite wire Cu-Nb.
The offered technology provides the following advantages:
- for use of the technology it is not necessary to disassemble car because access to the other side of parts is not needed;
- high-speed deforming allows smoothing deep dents without appearance of cracks;
- paint coating remains undamaged;
- high productivity (up to 1 impulse per minute);
- a possibility smoothing difficult dents;
- vacuum method provides maximum pressure of 1 bar only.
