The invented technology by Bulgarian research team in the framework of FP7 funded research project refers to contactless detection of phase transition in liquid crystal state by means of laser induced surface photo charge effect. This could be applicable to electronics, optoelectronics, acoustics, chemical technology and etc.
The partner sought is to acquire the invention and to develop a new instrument, under a license agreement.
A fundamental property of the phase transition is polymorphism, which is indication of material’s structural and textural changing, by means of temperature or concentration variation. The polymorphism is most typical for the liquid crystals. They are matter of state between solid body and isotropic liquids, whose inherited characteristics feature is significant physical anisotropy (optical, electrical and magnetic), which is very like in the solid crystals and in the same time they expose theology, typical for the isotropic liquid - a unique properties of the organic matter.
With aim to improve the definitely determination of existence of phase transition in polymorphic systems, like liquid crystals, it is applied contactless, laser induced, measurement of surface photo charge in the liquid crystal cell.
In particular, Bulgarian research team in the framework of FP7 funded research project revealed, that the response signal is noticeably enhanced exactly during the phase transition in the monitored sample.
As a result comparatively inexpensive technology is achieved, fast for implementation and one objective judgment of the phase transition in such thermodynamic systems. The researchers are sought for lisence agreement to transfer of rights involving the authorization to use the licensed material (by the licensee) , in return for a fee or share of royalties.
There are few methods for identification of phase transitions in liquid crystals: Polarization optical microscopy and the structural methods like Differential scanning calorimetry, Differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and etc. These methods have some disadvantages, like expensive, long preparation and slowly implementation, which could create problems, when using such applications. Therefore the precise and in time determination of phase state could occur very difficult task.
This is eliminated by the invented technology which is easy and inexpensive to be implemented in diagnostic systems in electronics, optoelectronics, acoustics, chemical technology and etc.
Research team is looking for industrial partner to share the ownership of the patent application during the review process and to develop industrial device for different applications in electronics, optoelectronics, acoustics, chemical technology, etc. Such applications would be for instrumentation and research.
