A Dutch company specialized in floating platforms for oil and gas production is investigating concepts to produce liquid synthetic fuels from hydrogen made of wind energy on vessels enabling safe transport of energy generated in remote areas at sea where power cables are not feasible. A technical or research cooperation agreement is proposed to develop the technical concept and a service agreement to evaluate the business case. This request refers to an innovation challenge on an open platform.
The Dutch company is a designer, builder and operator of floating platforms for oil and gas production (FPSO’s) in deep waters. In the energy transition from oil/gas towards renewable energy sources, they are looking for opportunities to use and apply their existing FPSO knowhow into these new markets.
In the energy transition to sustainable energy, offshore wind becomes more and more important. After offshore wind turbines in coastal and shallow waters such as the North Sea, the latest developments point towards offshore wind farms in more remote seas with stronger winds. Wind farms in remote areas may not economically be connected to the shore via electrical cables, and new technological concepts are needed for the transportation of the energy to the shore.
Electrical power can be converted into hydrogen, but further steps are required to convert this gas into a transportable liquid synthetic fuel, such as ammonia, methanol or formic acid. This might be an opportunity for the company to use their floating platforms in another way.
Therefore the company would like to get into contact with organizations with potential disruptive ideas that show potential for efficient conversion of electric power into hydrogen or even further to ammonia, methanol, formic acid or other suitable liquids and wants to investigate the technical and economic feasibility together to demonstrate its economic viability.
The company is looking for organizations that are interested to develop this technical concept to an economically viable business case in a consortium. Cooperation with companies and organizations who can help them with developing efficient, compact and inherently safe installations to convert electrical energy into a liquid might take place in the frame of a technical or research cooperation agreement. Also organizations who can evaluate the overall economic feasibility of this floating offshore wind concept with hydrogen conversion are invited. This cooperation might be in the frame of a service agreement, but other cooperation agreements can be discussed later.

After that, the firm will select the organizations with whom they would like to cooperate in the development of a solution. Once the challenge is closed, expressions of interest for this technology request will be treated in the traditional way.
