General information

Short Summary
The Virtual sommelier mobile application targets a global wine consumer audience and provides an easy to use virtual assistant that will become an every day companion when it comes to wine market and wine as a product.
Full Description
As a product, wine is quite complex and most of the times, an average consumer will need the help of a professional sommelier or wine expert in order to attain basic knowledge and guidance about wine in order to make the right decisions when it come to selecting a bottle of wine. As the international market becomes over saturated with wine offerings from around the globe, end consumers are facing the problem of making the correct selection of a wine that will suit their needs and personal preferences.

Through the use of readily available tools and some forms of artificial intelligence, the mobile application aims to become the point of reference for consumers and producers, thereby creating an ecosystem where consumers can find all the necessary information that will help them perform the correct choice, while producers in each local market can find a way to promote their products into a global audience.

Artificial Sommelier Application is a high end application for all levels of HORECA that can reach remote islands and regions in Greece and eventually foreign markets The application is a highly sophisticated tool for both restaurateurs and consumers.
The key input for this application is provided by the specialized team, that is formed by sommeliers having many decades of experience in the wine selection and consulting to restaurants. The staff each season reviews the restaurant’s menu and feed the application with information and possible combinations from the restaurant’s wine list, offering at least six different alternatives. As the operation period of the application will mature, the machine learning algorithms and structure of the application will feed the database of the back-end and eventually will automatically provide selections to the clients, based on the menu, the wine list, the reviews from the customers/restaurants for previous proposals.

It is designed to combine data from all the restaurants and customers that use the application, in order to provide more accurate propositions. One of the key points is that apart from the data that are going to feed the application, the expertise from the sommeliers is significant, since they are going to continuously revise the list of wines offered, since they usually vary for several reasons (i.e. temperature, year of production, storage etc).
Advantages and Innovations
Functionalities:
-User downloads the virtual sommelier application
-User clicks the Virtual List icon and opens the mobile device camera.
-User points the camera of the device to the printed wine list and the contents of the list appear on the device in the form of electronic wine list which is presented to the native language of the user.
-From this point onwards, user can get information about
- the wine itself,
- its producer,
- Organoleptic information about the variety.
- Suggested food pairing
- Prices and wineshop where the wine is available.

The Virtual list utilizes Google translation APIs that are readily available, and through the use of camera, performs automatic text recognition and translation to the native language of the user.
This feature allows the user to read an understand a wine list everywhere in the world, even if the list is written in a foreign language that user does not understand. Additionally, virtual sommelier can retrieve and present the wine label of the scanned wines, aiding users to visualize the bottle that they will be ordering. Virtual list feature also operates by scanning a wine label from a bottle that customers may come across at a selling point (wine shops, restaurants etc). Pictures of the wine bottle can be stored in the user favorites should user opt to register in the app. Retrieved information is categorized with the use of tags, and presented to the relevant section of the app. User is also referred to the website of the producer, or the original sources of information.
The information is presented to the user in his/her native language, or any language that the user has preselected. Native language resources are preferred and prioritised, while for the items that there is no information in users native language, a reverse Google translation is attempted.
The operation of the feature does not require users to log-in, it is an open and free feature.
