General information
- Short Summary
- Cleaning and impregnation process of natural stone or synthetic material surfaces that consists in the use of siloxane-type compounds defined as coupling agents that give the treated substrate a hydrophobic, antibacterial character and, as a result of functionalization with anionic, cationic reactive groups or non-ionic with a detergent role, i.e. cleaning power of the treated surface. The products made can be applied on various new surfaces with a preventive role or surfaces already in use.
- Full Description
-
The cleaning and impregnation process consists in treating the substrate with siloxane compounds as coupling or silanizing agents (RO)3Si-CaHbX which form covalent bonds with the treated substrates through (RO3)Si- type groups, while -CaHbX provides functions new surfaces (Figure 1) due to the introduced functional groups. The use of these silanes (functionalization / coupling agents), presents in the general structure (Figure 2) an end with a hydrophilic character (X= –COO–, –SO3–, –NH2, –NH3+, –N(CH3)3+ , polyethylene glycol; polypropylene glycol) and a hydrocarbon/hydrophobic – alkyl/aryl chain of CaHb type.
The presence of hydrophobic hydrocarbon chains with a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C8-C20 type structure, and hydrophilic functional groups of the -NH2, -NR3+, -COO- or -SO3- type ensures easier cleaning of the surfaces on which they are applied due to their character of detergent induced by the CaHbX configuration. Quaternary compounds of the type (-NH3+,-NR3+) have the role of inducing both the surface cleaning character and the antibacterial, antifungal, anti-adherent and antibiofilm effect. Ethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol type compounds provide anti-adhesive properties by reducing the hydrophobic interactions characteristic of the surface - bacterial cells, and the immobilization of these groups will ensure a long-lasting activity.
Coupling agents of the siloxane type show an increased reactivity for inorganic, mineral or composite substrates due to the SiOH-type polar groups existing on the substrate. The presence of siloxane Si-O-Si compounds resulting from the condensation reaction between the reactive groups on the support and the functionalization reagent leads to the formation of a network which has the role of partially reducing the pores of the treated surface, through the lining effect of pores. - Advantages and Innovations
-
• • Compared to other processes that use siloxane-based compounds, the coupling agents exemplified by the general formula (RO)3Si-CaHbX are characterized by a chain of carbon atoms found in the structure of detergents (C8-C20) and are used without other surfactants or emollients. The reactive groups with the dual role of ensuring the self-cleaning character of the surfaces and the antimicrobial/antibiofilm activity.
• Compared to other existing impregnation processes on the market, this patent gives antimicrobial character to surfaces treated by the chemical composition of siloxanes. Functionalization agents based • on siloxanes with the formula (RO)3Si-CaHbX based on ammonium groups can form quaternary ammonium salts that give antimicrobial activity to the treated surfaces.
• • The use of compounds based on polysiloxane forms directly or by mixing with other surfactants detergents, films, which cover the treated substrate, and which act as a surface cleaning product. Compared to other processes, the use of more surfactants can affect the treated substrate and the films formed can lead to preventing the substrate from breathing. The presence of catalysts and even aromatic solvents can affect the structure of the substrate. The application of solutions in certain cases is done under pressure, so it requires expensive technologies. - Stage of Development
