General information
- Short Summary
- A Dutch company has developed innovative technology that utilizes energy-efficient plasma to transform CO2, a significant climate change contributor, into valuable chemicals. The company seeks industrial partners to customize this technology for specific applications. Target sectors include cement and oil & gas, which can harness excess electrical energy to convert CO2 into chemical energy. This technology enables industries to reduce their carbon footprint while producing marketable products.
- Full Description
-
The Dutch SME is collaborating with a Technical University to develop a new generation of plasma systems for air purification. This second-generation technology is based on Pulsed Power (PP) plasma technology and is expected to be more energy-efficient and more precise in removing harmful gases or modifying gases. The project aims to convert methane and or Co2 into other chemical substances. This will require significant improvements in process efficiency and system optimization. The project team will develop new knowledge and build a pilot system to test the technology with end users.
About the technology in steps:
1 Polluted air is processed by pulsed plasma reactor
2 Very short pulses of several 10k volts
3 Intervals of 1 nanoseconds
4The plasma converts various harmful molecules into new substances / hydrocarbons
5 Air is cleaned
6 No CO2 emission
Achievements:
- Development of second-generation plasma reactors at the University
- TRL 5 / 6
- Pilot scale
- Scientific proof of CO2 conversion
The company is now looking for industrial partners to test and implement the technology. - Advantages and Innovations
-
Advantages of the invention:
* Up to 90 % reduction of energy use compared to traditional air scrubbers
* No moving parts
* No consumables like chemicals, filters etc and hardly any water required
* Produces (green) hydrocarbons who are normally produced by using fossil fuels
* Use: final stage of a process: ‘end of pipe'; minimal constructional changes
* Safe operating temperature max 32c
Industrial flue gases of oil company, steel companies and industrial bakeries have been successfully tested / validated with this technology
* Technology effectively tested with for example methane, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and hydrogen Sulfide - Stage of Development
