- Short Summary
- A Turkish university that has experience in EU projects is looking for partners and coordinator for HORIZON-CL6-2025-01-CIRCBIO-01 call. The university offers its capabilites for textile engineering.
- Full Description
-
The Turkish university is one of the oldest universities in Turkey and it has been participating to the EU projects since FP7. The university has 19 faculties and employs around 3000 researchers.
The university is developing a project idea for HORIZON-CL6-2025-01-CIRCBIO-01 call and it is currently looking for partners as beneficiaries or coordinator. Here is the project details;
Objective:
To explore the reuse potential of tobacco agricultural residues (stalks, roots, and dust) by converting them into bio-based, biodegradable composite materials for low-impact applications such as insulation panels, packaging supports, or nonwoven structures.
Why Tobacco Waste?
Tobacco is a widely cultivated crop in Türkiye, but its by-products are rarely valorised. Tobacco stalks and roots are lignocellulosic in nature and contain fiber-like structures that may be suitable as reinforcement materials when properly treated and blended with biodegradable matrices (e.g., PLA, PHA, PBAT). Their aim is to upcycle these residues into sustainable material streams.
Their Role as a Partner:
The university can contribute through:
Agronomic evaluation and residue mapping (Faculty of Agriculture)
Fiber extraction, characterization, and composite prototyping (Textile Engineering)
Mechanical and thermal testing of composites
Possible training/VET modules on sustainable material usage
