General information

Short Summary
The Dutch company, a processor of fish, shellfish, and crustaceans, together with Dockwize, an innovation platform and connector, challenge you to: develop a new and/or improved packaging solution for our 1kg mussel packaging that demonstrably reduces the environmental footprint — without compromising shelf life, food safety, product quality, or cost price. The solution should also be scalable or adaptable to other packaging sizes such as 2kg, 5kg, and 10kg
Full Description
The Dutch company, a processor of fish, shellfish, and crustaceans, together with Dockwize, an innovation platform and connector, challenge you to: develop a new and/or improved packaging solution for our 1kg mussel packaging that demonstrably reduces the environmental footprint — without compromising shelf life, food safety, product quality, or cost price. The solution should also be scalable or adaptable to other packaging sizes such as 2kg, 5kg, and 10kg.

A complete list of requirements and preferences will be provided upon registration. The main criteria are:
• Demonstrably lower environmental footprint, in terms of CO₂ reduction and prevention of food waste;
• Minimum product shelf life of 7 days, preferably longer;
• Suitable for cold storage and transport, under varying atmospheric conditions;
• Resistant to salty moisture and mechanical stress;
• Recyclable or circular, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations;
• Compatible with the current supply chain and production environment, or enables its optimization;
• Cost competitive in the long term compared to current packaging solutions.
Advantages and Innovations
In principle, the Dutch company will become the first customer of the final winning solution.

The Dutch company will select the two most promising concepts emerging from the challenge for an intensive testing phase to evaluate their potential for successful implementation. If the outcome is positive, the Dutch company will become the first official customer of the chosen solution. In addition, and if needed, the selected party will receive active support from the Dutch company in achieving a successful market launch. This includes access to in-house expertise and resources, as well as warm introductions and collaborations with relevant retailers and packaging suppliers.

This support represents a best-effort commitment, without guarantees regarding success or purchase volume.

Furthermore, the winning concept will receive exposure at the Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona, April 2026.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought
Possible solution directions:
• Alternative packaging materials (e.g. replacing polypropylene (PP) with bioplastics, glass, cardboard, etc.);
• Improved packaging design that reduces energy consumption during production and transport (e.g. lighter, stronger, simpler, more compact, etc.);
• Packaging that extends shelf life, resulting in less spoilage and longer product freshness;
• Pre-packaging interventions that contribute to improved shelf life;
• A completely new approach to the entire value chain;
• Or combinations of the above.
