General information

Short Summary
A German tech company, specializing in environmental intelligence, offers an AI-based early-warning platform for flood risk management, designed especially for small rivers and vulnerable catchments. It integrates data from IoT sensors, meteorological services, and other environmental sources to deliver real-time forecasts and actionable alerts. The SME seeks municipalities, public authorities, and engineering partners for deployment and commercial agreements with technical assistance.
Full Description
With climate change intensifying local weather extremes, flash floods along small and medium-sized rivers are becoming more frequent and more dangerous—yet traditional flood warning systems often overlook these smaller catchments. To address this, a German environmental tech SME developed a fully integrated early-warning platform tailored to the needs of local communities and emergency services.

The solution brings together diverse environmental data sources into one intelligent platform. It collects real-time data from IoT sensors deployed in the field—including water level, precipitation, and soil moisture. Moreover, all available, additional data sources like rainfall data from meteorological services, already existing sensors and other open data providers can be integrated to the platform. All acquired environmental data is processed through three distinct early-warning modules:

1. Threshold Monitoring Module – Continuously tracks observed and predicted water levels and rainfall to trigger alerts when predefined thresholds are exceeded.
2. AI-Powered Flood Forecast Module – Uses live sensor and weather data to predict whether river flooding is likely in the coming hours, offering real-time, data-driven forecasts.
3. AI-Based Flood Impact Mapping Module – Provides real-time, high-resolution flood risk maps for the next 2 hours, estimating expected water levels and flood extent based on river dynamics and rainfall intensity.

The early warning modules require data from sensors in the field. The German SME creates concepts for the instrumentation and can supply and instrument the sensors via a large network of suppliers throughout the EU. Each IoT sensor network for their solution is custom-designed using flow path and flood risk analysis, ensuring that sensor placements are optimally aligned with local hydrological conditions and potential hazard zones. This ensures a high level of accuracy and responsiveness, even in complex terrain.

The system is non-invasive, easy to install, and scalable to fit both urban and rural environments. The SME supports full implementation, from design and setup to operation and maintenance.

The system has already been deployed successfully in several German municipalities and now the company seeks to expand internationally.
Advantages and Innovations
• Integrates all relevant environmental data: Combines sensor data, meteorological input, and public datasets in one cohesive system
• Three-layered early-warning intelligence: Threshold alerts, AI-based flood forecasts, and live impact maps
• Optimized for small rivers and catchments: A critical area often underserved by conventional systems
• Custom sensor network design based on flow path and risk analysis: Ensures optimal system performance and targeted monitoring
• Non-invasive, scalable, and easy to install: Can be deployed without major infrastructure work
• Actionable, real-time information: Supports fast and informed decision-making for public safety and emergency response
• Supports climate resilience: Helps communities adapt to more frequent and intense weather events
