General information

Short Summary
Call for projects (TRL 8&9) - €25 million - to set up a hydrogen valley in Wallonia.

The aim of the call is to identify mature projects, challenge them (state of the art) and assess their contribution in terms of deep decarbonisation.

It will also form part of Wallonia's hydrogen strategy, which envisages Wallonia as a whole eventually becoming a Hydrogen Valley.
Full Description
The full description of this call is available via this link https://www.wallonie-entreprendre.be/fr/actualites/expertise/appel-a-projet-pour-une-premiere-vallee-de-lhydrogene-en-wallonie/

Applications are in French.
Advantages and Innovations
The results of the project should contribute to the following objectives:
- System integration - integrating several elements together to improve overall synergies and facilitate sectoral coupling;
- System efficiency - improving the overall energy and economic efficiency of the integrated system;
- Improving the security and resilience of the energy system, e.g. through the production of hydrogen from locally available renewable energy sources;
- Market creation - demonstration of a new market for hydrogen;
- Creation of direct jobs (and indirect jobs where appropriate), quality of the jobs created and inclusion of the project in the development of a new professional sector.
- Complementarity of hydrogen with RES, integration with other technologies, existing infrastructures;
- Assessment of the availability and affordability of a clean (pollution-free) energy supply for industrial and urban use, while also taking into account environmental impacts such as water use;
- Mutualisation of production or distribution and storage, assuming decentralisation as a key parameter;

- Help define or test regulatory requirements at the relevant level of governance;- Increasing knowledge management with socio-economic and environmental impact assessment to enable optimisation of valley operation and further development;- Development of public awareness of hydrogen technologies, including contributions from the social sciences and humanities where relevant;- Integration of the valley into the Walloon and European ecosystem.

Geographic area covered:
For the purposes of the call, the geographical area targeted is limited to the territory of the Walloon Region.

IPR description
To be eligible, projects must meet the following minimum criteria:
(TRL 8&9)
- The minimum nominal equivalent production capacity must be 1,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year (equivalent to a production unit with a minimum output of 10 MW);
- The hydrogen produced in the valley must be low-carbon (and therefore mainly green), with a target of 100% green by 2035;
- Hydrogen production must be able to meet a clearly identified demand;
- The maintenance of employment in the operating units in Wallonia from the date of introduction of the project and throughout its duration.
Projects must be able to demonstrate that significant thought or expertise has been developed in at least the following areas:
- Production or supply of renewable energy or energy market dynamics;
- Production of hydrogen by electrolysis;
- Engineering;
- Use of hydrogen in various sectors of activity.

Partner Sought

Expected Role of a Partner
The project must produce and consume at least 1,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year. For the purposes of this call, the volume of hydrogen corresponds to the hydrogen produced by a 10MW electrolyser. The calculation of the carbon intensity of the hydrogen integrated into the project must meet the requirements of the previous point.Use the hydrogen produced to supply more than one end sector or more than one application in the mobility, industry and energy sectors or more than one end customer. The two main applications/consumptions should each use at least 20% of the total hydrogen produced.
The volumes of H2 produced and distributed for the various end uses must be consistent with the amount of investment envisaged.
The bidder will specify the various uses of the hydrogen on the basis of commitments either at partnership level or through binding letters of intent. All uses of the hydrogen produced may be considered, provided they are relevant. The production of hydrogenated vectors (e-fuels, for example) may be considered, provided that the scheme for using such vectors is also established.
Proposals must also demonstrate that the various applications for hydrogen are used in synergy and not in competition.
