General information

Short Summary
A industry focused Canadian research centre has the capacity to serve a wide range of sectors that require applied research services in the fields of manufacturing and materials science. The centre seeks research and development cooperation agreements with enterprises that would like to leverage their resources and access on-demand research and development services including multidisciplinary teams of experts and cutting-edge equipment.
Full Description
In 2020, the Applied Research and Innovation Services, located in a Canadian technology institute, established a centre for innovation and research in advanced manufacturing and materials to identify and address challenges faced by the industry, as manufacturing and materials systems evolve into smarter and cleaner solutions. The centre’s mission is to facilitate, accelerate, and foster innovation.

The technology institute, one of Canada’s top applied research institutes, is located in Alberta, Canada. It has specialized research facilities and full-time staff dedicated to providing the services firms need to take their products from concept to prototype.

The centre’s expert researchers, equipment, and facilities support business planning, product design and development, fabrication and prototyping, product testing, and technology verification, culminating in industry education and public outreach.

Facilities include:

1. COMPOSITES AND SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS LAB, a research lab, focusing on developing composite materials, prototyping, and conducting research on sustainable added-value materials. The Lab endeavors to employ large scale composite manufacturing and automated mold making via robotic arms. It conducts research around novel sustainable materials and explores end-of-life and upcycling opportunities to create added-value materials.

2. INTELLIGENT DESIGN & ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING LAB, a research lab, focusing on fostering innovative solutions for modern-day design and manufacturing challenges. The Lab enables 3D modelling, topology optimization, numerical simulations, multi-material 3D printing, reverse engineering, and additional Industry 4.0 solutions. The lab envisions to integrate intelligent design and additive manufacturing solutions into the industrial workflows to foster innovation and sustainability.

3. ADVANCED MATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION LAB, a research lab, focusing on testing the composition, microstructure, mechanical and physical properties of various materials. The lab employs state-of-the-art equipment to analyze the mechanical and physical properties of a wide range of materials.

4. ADVANCED MANUFACTURING LAB specializes in automated and hybrid manufacturing, computer assisted design and modelling, computer-controlled machining, and assembly of functional prototypes. The lab endeavors to become a catalyst for emerging technology by collaborating with innovation-oriented firms. It further aims to explore advancements in manufacturing practices and application of materials science, as well as automation and hybrid manufacturing.

PARTNERSHIPS
The centre would like to enter into research and development cooperation agreements with small, medium and large-sized enterprises that would like to leverage their resources and access on-demand research and development services in Canada.
Advantages and Innovations
Advantages include:
1. The centre assigns all the intellectual property to its industry partners.
2. Industry partners have access to full-time experts, researchers and scientists and state-of-the-art research faclities.
3. The centre assist its industry partners to leverage their available budget by accessing government grants that can cover up to 90% of the cost of a project.

Innovations include:
1. The use of composite materials are superior to standard materials in terms of stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio.
2. The use of intelligent design and additive manufacturing results in:
• Failed simulations instead of failed parts.
• Less material wastage (its additive).
• Sustainable (mass reduction).
• Automates and digitizes design and printing processes.
3. The use of material testing:
• Predicts manufacturing outcomes.
• Identifies irregularities in mass produced materials.
• Informs engineering processes.
• Provides objective details on an engineering and design process.
4. Advanced manufacturing results in:
• Enhanced quality due to automated precision.
• Boost in productivity.
• Allows for continuous innovation.
• Reduced production time due to digitalized manufacturing.
• Safer and more convenient for repetitive tasks.
• More complex component geometry and material selection.
