General information

Short Summary
Levan (LVN) is a carbohydrate biopolymer that is synthesized by several different microorganisms and plants. As a result of the studies that have been conducted for enlighten of LVN structure, it has been determined that it is a fructan homopolysaccharide and consists of β-D-fructofuranose units linked to each other by β- (2 → 6) glycosidic bonds. Applications are available in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food sectors.
Full Description
Biosensors are analytical tools that are used for the sensitive and selective analysis of the target molecule. Biosensors have great potential to substitute conventional analytical methods and tools including chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques due to their capability for miniaturization and formation as hand-held end products.

This patent describes the fabrication of a disposable electrochemical biosensor based on the modification of single-use pencil graphite electrodes (PGEs) with LVN for the use of the monitoring of nucleic acids drugs, additives and/or toxins. Simple and practical modification of the PGEs with LVN is achieved, and an anticancer drug-DNA interaction is monitoring using LVN-PGEs and voltammetric technique. Drug analysis and nucleic acid detection are also possible using the LVN-PGE based electrochemical biosensor platform.
Advantages and Innovations
This patent covers the application of LVN for the development of a disposable electrochemical biosensor as the first time in the state of art. The advantages of the LVN-PGE based single-use electrochemical biosensor are its being practical, time saver, affordable and great potential for the adaption of a hand-held analytical device through its miniaturizable structure.
