General information
- Short Summary
- The project aims at developing a technology that captures carbon dioxide from flue gas using a gas hydrate process in natural conditions.
- Full Description
-
Big French R&D Institution is preparing EIC Pathfinder as a Coordinator and is looking for a company from the Northern Europe.
The current concepts of gas-hydrate-based CO2 capture from post-combustion flue gas generally require adding additives or promoters to reduce pressure and temperature requirements for gas hydrate formation.
The main challenge of this process is maintaining the necessary thermodynamic conditions on a large scale.
The technology differs from what is already known because it uses naturally-imposed temperature conditions to form a gas hydrate.
Some preliminary experiments performed in the laboratory have suggested the possibility of this technology to capture carbon dioxide from flue gas. However, further studies are required for the industrial development of this technology. - Advantages and Innovations
-
The technology can address the challenges mentioned above to facilitate the scaling up from laboratory experiments to industrial-scale operations because:
(1) it uses naturally-imposed temperature conditions (thus, the energy cost related to temperature control is zero);
(2) it uses a sand bed (which is abundantly available in nature), providing a higher contact surface between gas and water to accelerate hydrate formation (thus, there is no need for chemical additives or promoters);
(3) it uses a static process where there is only gas flux (thus, there is no need to stir or circulate hydrate slurries);
(4) it uses parallel hydrate reactions without hydrates slurries circulation (thus, there is no risk of hydrate blockage). - Technical Specification or Expertise Sought
