General information
- Short Summary
- A team of engineers and computer scientists from Greece have developed a digital platform that simulates and models the thermal behavior of structural elements taking into account the influence of the humidity of individual materials (hygrothermal behavior). They are looking for partners abroad in order to conclude commercial co-operation in the form of licence agreements along with technical support.
- Full Description
-
This Greek cluster and digital innovation hub was established in 2020, focusing specifically on the construction industry with the primary objective of offering tools and guidelines for the complete lifecycle of smart zero or positive energy buildings. Its mission is to connect science, innovation, and the economy with all relevant stakeholders in the construction and building renovation sectors, focused on energy savings and efficiency. The founding members include a mix of small and large companies, research institutions, and public associations, all operating within the construction domain.
They represent the entire value chain, reflecting evolving trends in technologies, processes, and projects.
The client offers a variety of services that encompass all stages of building, from planning and commissioning, to construction and renovation, as well as demolition and recycling of buildings and their components.
The particular technology on offer is an innovative digital platform for the analysis of the hygrothermal behavior of building elements. It is designed to generate simulations of the thermal performance of structural elements, taking into account the influence of the humidity of individual materials.
Through this smart digital tool, the end-user can calculate the following:-
- temperature and humidity profiles in relation to space / time parameters
- heat flow to and from the building element
- thermal performance indicators
- cost and energy savings.
The software platform enables users to choose data and characteristics of construction materials from a comprehensive library, or create their own selections. This functionality allows end-users to define structural elements made up of various layers of materials. They can conduct parametric studies using multiple customizable parameters (both physical and numerical), which helps facilitate the design and dimensioning process, enabling them to select the most suitable insulation materials based on their specific needs.
Users can employ three different numerical methods depending on their scenario objectives:-
- steady-state solution
- time-transient analysis
- periodic conditions analysis to define typical day conditions, reflecting the time period and environmental conditions of interest.
The client seeks to establish commercial partnerships with foreign partners through licensing agreements, along with providing tailored support services to aid in the technology transfer process. - Advantages and Innovations
-
This digital platform conducts integrated heat and humidity simulations across diverse climate conditions for building elements, multilayer components, and entire structures. By modelling heat and humidity transfer, users can optimize designs, detect potential risks and issues during the planning phase, and make informed assessments. Additionally, the tool proves invaluable for renovation of existing buildings where documentation is lacking or interventions are particularly complex, providing essential insights for decision-making.
The tool generates analytical results and diagrams for the examined, user-defined range of conditions, presenting spatiotemporal profiles of temperature and humidity, heat flow to and from the structural element, and essential thermal indicators such as thermal transmittance (known as U-value), thermal lag, and temperature damping. Additionally, it provides estimates of cost and energy savings, offering a more techno-economically holistic approach.
Moreover, the tool enables real-time connectivity with thermal cameras or humidity meters, allowing it to receive data that more accurately reflects actual conditions in insulation elements. This capability sets it apart from competitors, making it a highly innovative solution in the field. By leveraging this feature, the tool provides end-users with valuable insights for on-site measurements and assessments. - Stage of Development
