General information
- Short Summary
- A consortium led by a Danish university seeks a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) specifically working with battery waste to join a Horizon Europe project (HORIZON-CL4-INDUSTRY-2025-01-MATERIALS-52) aimed at significantly improving Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) processes using Generative AI and Digital Twins.
- Full Description
-
The AID-LCA project (Artificial Intelligence-Driven Life Cycle Assessment) will develop a novel AI-based platform to transform how LCAs are performed for chemicals, advanced materials and related products. Aligned with the Horizon Europe topic HORIZON-CL4-INDUSTRY-2025-01-MATERIALS-52, the project will combine Generative AI with Digital Twin technologies to automate and streamline LCA tasks—from data gathering and gap-filling to scenario simulation and regulatory alignment.
AID-LCA directly addresses the urgent need for tools that lower the barrier to entry for SMEs aiming to design products in line with Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles.
The consortium already includes academic institutions, technology developers, and regulatory experts. To complement this consortium, the university is looking for a battery waste SME that can contribute real-world insights and feedback as an industry partner. - Advantages and Innovations
-
AI-assisted LCA with reduced manual workload.
Digital Twin simulations for real-time environmental forecasting.
Compliance-ready output tailored to EU standards Sustainable by Design (SSbD), Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), Product Environmental Footprint (PEF).
SME-focused: dramatically reduces time and expertise needed to conduct LCA. - Stage of Development
- Concept stage
- Sustainable Development Goals
- Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
- Goal 17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal
- Goal 13: Climate Action
- Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Partner Sought
- Expected Role of a Partner
-
the consortium is looking for an SME that specifically works with battery waste and can participate in the project by offering insights in one or more of the following roles:
Sectoral Regulatory Insight Provider – Assist in mapping and interpreting sector-specific regulations, policies, and compliance requirements.
Early Adopter / Use Case Pilot – Join testing of the platform to evaluate its usability, efficiency, and performance in relevant industrial settings.
Co-creation Partner – Take part in co-design workshops, feedback sessions, and development loops to enhance explainability, transparency, and user experience.
Dataset Validation and DPP Interoperability Contributor – Provide battery sector-specific LCI (Life Cycle Inventory) data and validate how project outputs integrate with DPP systems.
Equity and Inclusion Risk Informant – Share insights on digital accessibility, industry readiness, and social or economic barriers to promote inclusive and ethical AI-supported tools.
This SME is not expected to lead any work packages, but to serve as a valuable sparring partner for the academic and research institutions who do. Estimated time commitment is modest – around 1–2 months per year. - Type and Size of Partner
