General information

Short Summary
This UK based SME is an engineering technology business specialising in solar thermal technology. Their patented technology provides for efficient heat generation utilising solar thermal concentrators.

The SME is seeking potential trial sites to pilot its technology in industrial / agricultural applications (120-220 degrees C) to replace traditional industrial heating with efficient solar thermal technology.

Objective is to demonstrate use-cases of the technology and build cost-benefit data.
Full Description
This client is a UK based engineering technology business specialising in solar thermal technology. Their patented technology provides for efficient heat generation utilising solar thermal concentrators.

Flat Fresnel mirrors concentrate solar energy to allow temperatures up to 220°C cost effectively. Heat storage and integration to a backup heat source ensure reliable heat generation.

The client is looking for potential trial sites to test the efficiency of the solar heat generation within the local warm climate.

This technology has the potential to replace traditional industrial heating with efficient solar thermal technology.

The client is also looking to test the efficiency of the technology in industrial / agricultural applications (120-200 degrees C)
Industrial applications within the temperature range, include brewing / distillation / clothing manufacture / water desalination / food processing / chemical production and many others.

Application of this technology will provide both long-term financial and environmental benefits.

Objective is to demonstrate:
1. Verify lab-models from the use of this technology in warm climates
2. To develop use-cases of the technology and build cost-benefit data
Advantages and Innovations
Currently there are cost effective solar thermal collectors that can produce temperatures of up to 120°C. This is achieved using flat plate and evacuated tube collectors. Parabolic troughs are used to get high temperatures; however, these are expensive and are generally employed for district heating rather than individual factories.

This client’s solar thermal technology will allow factories to use solar energy to generate up to 200°C of heat cost effectively and without utilising too much space. This green sustainable technology will increase carbon savings by decreasing the need to use fossil fuels for heat generation. The flat Fresnel mirrors allow this technology to be efficient and cost effective. The technology is patented.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought
Partners with industrial processing facilities are sought who are engaged in industrial / food / agricultural processing using medium level temperatures (120-200 degrees C) with fossil fuel / electric heating.

A small amount of unshaded space will be required for the placement of this technology.

Trial sites needed to demonstrate the cost and energy savings to be achieved through replacing fossil fuels with this new solar thermal concentrator heating technology.

Partner Sought

Expected Role of a Partner
Partner will have industrial facilities with which to trial technology. The partner will have an industrial process that uses up to 200°C of heat currently generated by fossil fuels or electricity.

There should be sufficient unshaded roof space to carry solar collectors or spare land that can do the same.

No technical expertise in solar technology is required from the partner.
