General information

Short Summary
Scientists at a German university developed an electric bike stand for e-bikes that can be integrated into the frame or retrofitted. This guarantees effortless extension and a secure stand, as the bike stand automatically adapts to the terrain. It also serves as an immobilizer and thus as protection against theft. Prototypes have been tested. Licensees with an interest to refine the technology together with the inventors are sought.
Full Description
The transition to more environmentally friendly transport structures, whose necessity is becoming ever more apparent, is being facilitated by bicycles. Electric bicycles are increasingly enabling older people and those with physical impairments to travel by bike. They also facilitate professional commutes. But electric bikes are difficult to push or store (and this drawback is getting worse – their average weight is currently 25 kg). Furthermore they are attractive targets for bike thieves, especially when no secure area is available for parking.

A German university offers an integrated solution to both problems in the form of an electronic bike stand. The system allows the stand to be extended and retracted at the touch of a button, requiring no exertion on the part of the operator. The system locks the stand in the extended position so that it serves as an immobilizer. The mechanical design enables the stand to adjust automatically to the terrain, ensuring reliable support when the bike is tilted.

Manufacturer can integrate the system into the bike frame, or it can be retrofitted externally as a module. The electronic bike stand can be used for a wide range of two-wheeled vehicles. It is most useful with relatively heavy bikes such as e-bikes and public rental bikes and works well in both the B2C and B2B market. Integrating the stand into the design of newly developed bicycles allows its full benefit to be realized. It also eliminates the need for the housing with its fastening elements and the battery with its controller shown above, reducing weight and material usage sustainably.

Physical prototypes have been built and tested. The stand system’s adaptability to various frame geometries has been verified. The design is ready to manufacture and its mechanical structure optimized. The drive design is also completely finished.

Industrial licensees are sought.
