General information
- Short Summary
- A Swiss SME specializing in stainless steel waste containers seeks a partner to develop a durable and easy-to-apply coating. The coating should provide dirt-repellent and anti-adhesion properties for outdoor containers, ensuring easy cleaning and resistance to adhesives such as stickers. The solution would maintain functionality for at least three years, allow simple on-site repairs, be compatible with manual application methods. Cooperation sought: R&D joint development or technical assistance
- Full Description
-
An established Swiss SME producing durable stainless steel products seeks a development partner to create an advanced coating solution for outdoor applications. The coating must combine functional properties with aesthetic invisibility, ensuring that it does not alter the visual appearance of the underlying material.
Specifically, the solution should:
1. Adhere effectively to stainless steel without requiring extensive pre-treatment.
2. Be completely transparent and undetectable to the naked eye to maintain the original metallic finish.
3. Provide advanced hydrophobic properties to repel dirt, dust, and grime, allowing for natural cleaning by rain or light washing.
4. Facilitate the easy removal of adhesives, such as stickers, without damaging the coating or underlying surface.
5. Be durable, withstanding outdoor conditions (UV exposure, temperature fluctuations, and humidity) for at least three years without significant degradation.
6. Allow for simple, localized repairs in case of mechanical damage, eliminating the need for off-site maintenance.
The coating should be applicable using standard methods (e.g., spray or brush) to ensure ease of use during production or maintenance. It must meet environmental safety standards and be compatible with scalable manufacturing processes.
This project aims to enhance the functionality of products used in urban and public environments, contributing to sustainable development goals by reducing maintenance costs, increasing product lifespan, and supporting responsible material use in order to comply with the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (https://commission.europa.eu/energy-climate-change-environment/standards-tools-and-labels/products-labelling-rules-and-requirements/ecodesign-sustainable-products-regulation_en)
The desired technology partner should have expertise in advanced coatings, materials science, or surface engineering to co-develop and optimize the solution. Cooperation sought : technical assistance or development project under a R&D cooperation agreement. - Advantages and Innovations
-
• Simplifies container maintenance by reducing dirt and adhesive build-up.
• Supports sustainable urban waste management with a long-lasting, repairable coating.
• Minimizes operational costs for clients by decreasing cleaning frequency and efforts.
• Ensures aesthetic and functional quality of waste containers in public spaces. - Stage of Development

- Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
- Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
- Goal 13: Climate Action
- IPR description
-
• Durability: coating should last at least three years withstanding outdoor exposure.
• Performance: hydrophobic and adhesive-resistant properties.
• Application: easy-to-apply manually, similar to paint.
• Repairability: capability for localized on-site repairs.
• Cost: economically viable for mass production and scalable application.
• Compliance with environmental safety standards
Preferred partner expertise includes materials science, coating technology, and knowledge of environmentally friendly chemical formulations.
Partner Sought
- Expected Role of a Partner
-
Preferred partners include SMEs or R&D institutions with experience in industrial coatings or sustainable materials to develop a coating that can initially be tested on a small piece of metal and, upon success, scaled up to cover an entire waste bin.
The tasks to be performed by the partner sought:
• Collaborate on formulating and testing the coating.
• Provide technical assistance for scaling and application techniques.
• Support quality control and performance validation.
Cooperation could include joint development under a R&D cooperation agreement or technical assistance - Type and Size of Partner
